If they add a ton of custom abilities and ways to make each combo your own then so be it. MMO arcade beat um up sounds good to me.

The fact that they aren't outright lying to us by promising anything other than fun combat is the best sign that this game won't be shit. That's not to say it's great news that we have another game that doesn't seem to amount to much outside of combat, dungeons and instances but anything decent coming out is a welcome and needed change for this fucking awful industry.

No, it just means that the game's not trying to be all things to all people, and they've learned that constantly lying to one's player base isn't a good way to make money. The game could still be shit, or it could be great... we won't know until we try it.

I have noticed the same thing. It does look like the animations are jerky and are missing some frames or something.

SDCC 09 Report!

Looks like the animations are just placeholders. I really hope they don't limit power selections to just a few buttons on the PS3 controller.

First off character creation, it seems that when you create your character you don’t just start out with one power but with four plus powers not including your light and heavy attack from your focus. Also movement powers are selected at creation and can be used during combat unlike the other hero systems, also the city zones are kind of set up like skate parks and lend themselves to some dynamic action and is travel friendly. At release they are just focusing on Acrobatics, Fly, and Super Speed, but after release other travel modes may be considered.

At this time a character is comprised of many elements that are taken from the DC Universe. And although the costume editor will not be as massive as CoH or CO a characters look will easily be iconic “DC” in appearance and will reflect their origin as well. A great deal of gear that you earn in game will reflect your game progress and achievements but still stay with in your origin theme and personal colors, or even invisible to those who wish to keep their character simple.

Your character is comprised of:

Origin: Meta, Tech, or Magic
Focus: How you focus your powers, or what grants your powers. As a note claws is not currently a focus option, and you can not change your focus (power emanation point) once your character is created.
Powers: You get four active powers in each role, and you can change roles during combat with no cool downs. That is a total of 12 powers that can work together in some very interesting ways. There is no effect of powers upon other powers but, various powers can work together to effect other characters, environment, and even mission objectives. Such as setting up ice slicks and damage fields on a bag of money the bad guys are trying to get. Also there is of course some power tinting, still no green fire but red to yellow is do able, not yellow ice but white to blue reasonable. Also in the power selection there are no pets powers, no stealth crits, and no one shot kills. You want to take out a bad guy you have to work for it, no Aim+Build Up + Nuke= Dead Target.
Travel: Acrobatics Fly, and Super Speed, and you can use them in ways you can not in any other game, Nuff Said!
Abilities: This is a slider system of attributes that is still in development but things like strength allows you to pick up larger objects the higher your score and level that you are.
Gear: Is the items that you wear from drops after completing missions, sitting on spawns and camping creatures that drop rare loot will not happen. You will be rewarded for the completion of a series of tasks the more difficult the mission the better the drops and yes there will be raid quest, and Arkham is a doozy!!!
Boosts: Again a game element under development but they are the four items on the right side of the power bar. They along with your Abilities and Gear are what will make a character unique and powerful in game play. But there are no details of them at this time as they are still under development.

Some game elements that they will be looking at are yearly events, such as the Brainiac invasion, also the big DC events will be brought into the game about a year after they are published in the comics.

Also for you worry warts out there, yes the animations are just place holders they will be smoothed out as the game progresses.

Those concerned about being ganked, by a bunch of villains in a PvP situation in the open wold will be comforted that is a someone gets repeatedly killed by an overwhelming force it summons the JLA or LoD to come stomp the griefers

Some things that are not yet developed of that they can not discuss at this time are the following:
Release Date
Start of Beta (should be going on by the next Comic Con)
Subscription Price
Sidekick/Mentor System
Super Group Details
Missions
Maximum Levels

After release and for future expansions they will be looking to the community to see where we want to go, they will be really listening to the community for future expansions.

Most importantly of all my wife has played the current PvP demo and approves of the game, so it is now Game Girl Certified

Sony is really supporting this game, and they are doing things with the unreal engine that they did not think was possible to do in an MMO. They are all set for making some nose in 2010 so don’t get disappointed but the quiet in the mean time. The marketing staff members promised me that DCUO Source will be in the loop and they look forward to working with us to highlight the game and to give love to the hard core fans found here.

Rumor has it that the reason why there is no release date, and that news on this has slowed down, is that SOE is considering cancelling the game. This is in light of Champions not doing well; supposedly SOE thinks the genre might be oversaturated.

I wouldn't be surprised. Think about it - the last post in this thread was six months ago, and since then, SOE has released almost nothing new on it. If SOE isn't cancelling the game, they sure are doing a poor job in keeping interest high.

There is an adage in business that if you don't give your customers enough info on what's going on, they'll fill in the blanks themselves. The total lack of communication as to how the game is progressing, lack of release date, and seemingly lackadaisacal answers as to when the game will launch is causing rumors to fly.

It's SOE. They fucking suck. I just don't see them being a player in the mainstream MMO market ever again. They should just outsource EQ3 to someone with an ounce of passion left and focus on Free Realms and similar projects.

It couldn't be that CHO was horrible it must be over-saturation! Remember the mmo market was over-saturated with Eq1 also according to SoE.

They've been releasing character profiles of known heroes, Green Lantern, Power Girl etc slowly but surely. It's a bit late in the game to be cancelling, and DC has poured a pile of cash into this by now so it's pretty likely they and their parent company want to see something pushed out the door to try and at least recoup some of what they've put in.

I've no real trust in SoE and that it's also a PS3 game doesn't really help. It's a shame Sony every got their hooks into this game.

This game better be MMO Jesus for the amount of time and delays on it. Seriously, unless SOE devs have been using DC's money to snort cocaine off of hookers from Tijuana's behind, this game better be complete (as in not lacking content, balanced gameplay, and not alot of bugs). It feels like this game has been in development for five years.

Fragland.net V4 :: Still a lot of work to be done on DC Universe Online

DC Universe Online's senior producer told Official PlayStation Magazine that while they're still on track for releasing the game by the end of this year, a lot of work still needs to be done.

"We still have a lot of work ahead of us,"

"The good feeling is that we can look behind us and see the mountain of work we've done, and the stuff we have ahead of us is definitely smaller.

"We're really happy with the progress. But as far as dates go, we want to focus on one milestone at a time."
The PS3 MMO was first unveiled in 2008 and was supposed to be in stores beginning this year. Now release is scheduled for end of 2010.

"A lot of work ahead of us" sounds like we should start thinking about seeing it get delayed again.

Its been a while since I've read these boards. I've noticed a few minor things I thought I would comment on.

1) we're the developer and the publisher. That means we fund it ( not DC). We licensed the DC IP and work very closely with them.
2) these games take a while to make ( as an example WoW took over 5 years, EQ2 close to that same time).
3) It's a massively multiplayer action game running on the same server for both the PC and the PS3 with full physics.. it was hard. But we pulled it off. The team has done an excellent job. It is truly unlike any other mmo out there including Champions and CoH. You can pick up a bus and use it as a weapon. You can freeze another player and turn them into an ice cube and pick them up and throw them at someone else who's flying, and knock them out of the sky.
4) we will be making announcements about the beta soon. Yes the game is coming out this year for both the PC and the ps3.
5) lyrical you are automatically invited to the beta, if for no other reason than allowing me the pleasure of reading whatever you write.
6) there has never been a single solitary moment of time where canceling the game was ever discussed. Simply put - it's a great game that's taking time.
7) we have released a very steady stream of information about the game including having people play it at a lot of events and allowing them to videotape it.
