| Plugged In Like Neo | Wizard101 I haven't seen anything about this game posted here yet - so I thought I would mention it. The game is aimed towards a teen market, but plenty of adults will play it too I'm sure. It's a MMORPG that allows you to start out as a young wizard, level up and earn new spells, and earn treasure/equipment. The combat is a turn-based card game that is multiplayer or solo and involves you building a deck of your choice.. The world is bright, whimsical and fun and you can pick a school of magic to specialize in or use spells from different classes. Kill Ten Rats posted a review: Quote:
If you have kids or you're looking for a game to waste your time, the beta sign ups are open. (Note, there is an NDA - I didn't think there was but apparently I was wrong). http://www.wizard101.com

Sheesh, entire threads devoted to Harry Potter MMOs that don't exist - but I can't mention a wizard MMO in development without being called a shill.

| I've been playing it on & off for a while now. It's fun in a very casual sense, it's very simplistic and obviously kid focused. The art style is nicely done, it's a real treat when you move from the starting wizard city to kroktopia, the egyptian themed area. The gear you get tends to look pretty good, though it's often a kinda hodge-podged, though there is a dye shop. The combat is pretty cool at first, but gets somewhat tedious after a while, as each spell cast takes a decent amount of time to play out the full animation. It's kind of the Final Fantasy Summons syndrome -- really cool the first time you cast it, then after that it's just a set of time you're tapping your foot waiting for it to finish up. There's no real formal grouping, if you're in a combat, up to 3 other people can jump in. If extra people jump in, wandering monsters will try to jump in as well to even things out. Generally, this isn't a problem, but occasionally if the fight you were in was close, you might have been better off to have the fight end rather than continue with another enemy now who'll kill you. There's some strategy to the combat, but it's not really all that deep. The biggest factor always seemed to be who goes first, which is just randomly assigned at the start. Overall it's fun for a bit, but gets a bit tiring after a while. Though I think it'll probably hit its' target of pre/early teens pretty well. |
