| Sometimes the voice of FOH reason | Biggest Disappointment? Reading the Planetside thread got me thinking. Since you've been following game development which one proved to be the biggest let down for you? With the way advertising is now, it seems we know everything their is to know about a game months of even yeas before it comes out. I remember reading about Planetside thinking "Oh man a FPS and MMORPG combined? How can you go wrong?" Another one that comes to mind is Savage. For one guy, it's an RTS but for the people he's controlling it's an FPS. Great idea, but poorly executed. No one wanted to be told to mine gold, they wanted to go fight. So any other games come to your minds? At this point I almost want to stop reading about upcoming games to save myself the inevitable burn. I'm REALLY excited for the new Stars Wars game but I've been screwed over too many times to keep my hopes up. |

| For me it's Vanguard all the way. You get it hyped as the first "3rd generation MMO" fucking buzzwords but it was hyped as really an awesome MMO with the team that made EQ. Watching Brad come on here and pump it up, and getting into the beta really had me wanting to be on the edge of the latest in MMO's. Sadly, we all know the outcome. One reason I am not hyped at all for the newer titles on the horizon such as AoC or Warhammer is the PvP aspect. After seeing the travesty that is World of Warcraft PvP, I want developers to keep there PvP horse-shit as far the fuck away from PvE balance and risk vs reward as possible. If I am proven wrong great but as it stands I do not thing a MMO can ever be a good PvP game.

Whilst I'm pretty unimpressed with the current choice of MMOs I didn't have the expectations for them that I did for Vanguard.

I think PVP can make it in MMO's but I do believe for games to truly prosper they need to pick what they want. I don't think PVP and PVE exsist well at all together. Either be PVP OR PVE not both, or more often than not you will fail miserably. So far, WoW has done pretty good, but I wonder if all this constant rebalancing will not eventually catch up to them and bite them in the butt.

| I always stay very cynical of all games until they are out for a while or in open beta. Being a fanboy to a game that isn't out yet is retarded, and so is theorycrafting about a game that nobody understands yet either. The best way to know that someone is a cretin is if they have a signature about the class they will be in a MMORPG that isn't even in beta yet based on what they read in some video. |

As for the topic at hand, I'd say WoW. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the game for what it was, until I got so utterly burnt out, but their handling of PvP was so abysmal compared to what I expected, and what we were told would happen, that I can never help but have my enjoyment of the game tainted by my knowledge of what it could have been. Also the way they completely raped the lore and storyline, since I was a huge fan of the Warcraft universe pre-WoW.

| Sometimes the voice of FOH reason | I know I'll take shit for this and up having to do the knife fight thing where you get tried to the other guy's wrist but I really didn't care for EQ2. EQ has this character and soul to it that EQ2 didn't have. Just seemed so mechanical and cold. |

| To tell the honest truth, World of Warcraft was a huge disappointment to me. After all the hub-bub about it, I figured it would be the MMO I would play until I died. Then, after a while of playing, I discovered that it was pure crap. Once you get into the raiding game, it's just really formulaic and time-consuming. Oh, don't get me wrong, I had fun for a while, but without the draw of competition for boss spawns, it just got....routine and boring. The moments of excitement (learning a new raid encounter) were just too few and far between the drudgery of grinding to be fun. PvP was fun for a while, but even that eventually got boring due to a lack of new battlegrounds. I quit for the second time a few weeks after I got an Arena team together, and that had potential, but it really felt like you could get marginalized easily just based on gear. Oh well, that's my disappointment...for all the extreme fanboyism and hype that surrounds WoW, it just doesn't have the draw for me that I hoped it would. |

| You know... I was going to sit here and type shit about VG and EQ2 and LotRs and about how it sucks so bad in this industry to be promised so much stuff and then it just all goes to shit but you know what... I just don't care enough any more to go into it. We all know what has been done and why games have failed. I guess I am just getting old but I just don't care about MMOs any more.

I have a buddy that I think does it the right way. He doesn't let himself watch movie or game trailers, read reviews, etc. That way when something comes out he's judging it based on its merit, not on how it lived up to they hype.

My big disappointment was CoH. It was so much fun, until about level 20 and the grind started to really get to me, and it felt like I'd seen all the enemies. At level 40, it was a job, they managed to turn an amazing, fun game into a tortuous grind that quick.
