Vanguard and Horizons were the only games I really looked forward to, and they both sucked. Vanguard wasn't really a suprise because I was in beta when Brad was posting one thing on the FoH boards and another in the beta forums like a split personality. I knew then it probably wasn't going to be fixed/fun when it went live.

Anarchy online wasn't such a huge disappointment content wise since I'm not really a sci-fi fan, but was disappointed in how absolute crap the game ran at launch. Multiple crashes/rollbacks per hour for a long time. Buggy as hell everything. I really expected AO to be gone in 3 months.

Other games turned out to be crap but I really wasn't disappointed as they were something I just picked up to try.

EQ2. Mostly because I wanted so much for it to be good. When it released I played it for about a month and quit utterly disappointed. When I started to get burned out on Shards of Dalaya I tried resubscribing because ive become very casual and I just don't find it fun.

I can't even say what it is, it's just boring.

WAR will be my biggest disappointment when it releases though. If Dark Age of Camelot was still around I would be playing it.

Even with it's constantly shifting I win button, daoc is still great fun.

The game is by no means dead though. I have about 5 thidranki level characters (with one that RP leveled out), and two molvik. I still see plenty of action. Couldn't say about the top end, my only 50 is a friar.

I think mythic should experiment with a free to play model, with microtransactions for currency or armor. I could see sets of well tuned gear for the battlegrounds really selling well. I don't think the usual game balance arguments need apply. Leveling is so fast the game really is a pvp focused game.

I have several friends that would probably try the game if it were free, and I think they would enjoy it moreso than any other because of the great war action.

I read somewhere that mythic is kicking around the idea of another classic type server. With no mythwhatever items or toa bonuses. I'd be down for that. I think essentially what makes the battlegrounds fun is that CC isn't too out of control, and that people don't have a crap ton of wierd items turning you into frogs or shooting lightning out their asses.

AO annoyed me with a shitty launch and I never really got over it. DAoC was fun but the complete lack of polish, transparently shoddy launch and quantity of unneeded bullshit pissed me off. AC2 amused me but ultimately made me a little more cynical.

WoW made me angry at times and amazed me at times. Such an amazing beta(s) and a very decent launch combined with such a different direction than I would have liked for the game... ah, what to say?

At the end of the day though, no other game really got to me like VG. I was a Sigil board hound for quite a while and really, I bought into the line I was being fed. The worst thing for me looking back is that I think it could have been done and simply wasn't; rather than it all being pipe dreams and vapor from the start.

Oh well, I see no relief coming soon and that too is fine. After a long, long stretch I'm close to done with the genre anyhow.

Everquest really had me tied into the lore and the world, every game that came since I just kinda played, even WoW,without getting to much into lore or the world.

So EQ2 was so exciting for me,but it was a disappointment, it was just so unfamiliar. The game itself had many great ideas and concepts but at the same time had many bad concepts. So initially I was very upset about it.

Coming back to it now with Fay and Kunark I love the game and it's familiar, but the early levels in the original EQ zones just don't capture the essence of it's predecessor that I was wanting. They have also fixed much that I disliked early on.

All in all though taken from it's initial launch the game was my biggest disappointment. I didn't follow wow early on, it was hyped beyond beleife and so I wanted it to be a pure experience; I had a beta invite early on but I didn't use it and ignored media like these boards up until it's release, so I didn't have anything to be disappointed about going into it. I was disappointed in the pvp mechanics post launch as none worked as advertised and it seemed quite exciting on paper.

vanguard, hands down. i was in beta, i was going to silkyvenom every day posting, i wanted this game to succeed and bring back the "glory" days of EQ1, and it failed so fucking epically that its failure will never be duplicated. the game ran like shit, half the quests were broken and the world itself just felt dead. there were vast areas of nothingness and every single dungeon seemed like a cut and paste job. the loot was bleh and customization of characters was crap. i was so mad at myself for buying a 6 month sub and even more angry at my old EQ friends who dragged me over to VG with the promise of the good old days of EQ. i just don't understand how after 4+ years of development and 30+ million dollars that they could make a game so utterly shitty.

i think the worst part about it is this game did have so much potential. if they could have just polished it up a bit and got the game running without needing a NASA computer it would have at least been worth playing.

Why people buy 6month/12 month subs right off the bat always puzzles me. Generally I like to see if I like a game first before I sink tons of cash into it.

It would be like someone saying "Hey, I wanna see a hockey game!", then they buy a season ticket, go to the game, then decide they don't like watching hockey all that much. $$$FLUSH$$$

i agree. hindsight is always 20/20. i just really believed that VG was going to be the next EQ so i thought doing a 6 month sub was a no brainer. luckily for me i didn't do the 1 year sub like i was going to. oh well, live and learn.

In all seriousness, Horizons for me.

That game was going to be everything awesome in the world... it was basically designed as EVE + fantasy.

*sigh*

My brother, who isn't much of an MMO player, fell into the Horizons hype as well. Minutes after I installed it I knew he had wasted his money. He had that thing reserved for months too.

I fell into the Vanguard trap like everyone else. Not much to say about it, everything has been said to death.

There really haven't been many other games that have been major disappointments since I get into betas a lot of times now. AoC looks ok, but having played it at least I know what I'm getting into.

Guess the only game for the future that might flop is Warhammer.

I think Horizons would be much higher on everyone's list if it didn't go through the two or three year 'dead' period in development. Shit I remember hearing about Horizons in like 1999 or 2000 slightly after EQ came out and people talking about playing as dragons and how you got a 'random' race and had a small chance at being a dragon or some other shit and everyone thought it sounded amazing.

Vanguard #1 disappointment for me for reasons I don't need to go into (everyone already knows).

WoW was a huge disappointment for me for reasons that im not going to going on about, since I'll be owned by rabid fanbois. But, its my #2 reguardless, take it or leave it.

The early design docs for Horizons, so much wasted potential, and yes alot of it was hard/impossible to balance or implement, but it was just pure awesomeness on paper.

Here's why:

With most of the MMO's that let you down, you see the flaws pretty early on. The letdown is mostly from bugs or not living up to the hype.

With City of Heroes, the letdown was a whole different beast. When that game came out, and everyone jumped it, it was pure revelation. Pure, "OMG, holy crap, this rocks, best game ever..." yada, yada, yada. It was seriously pure kickass goodness and you could not stop.

Then, around lvl 30, it began to dawn on you and everyone you played with. You've all seen everything, done everything, and it's all just repeating itself. Same mobs, same instances. It's a cave, it's an office, it's the same crap over and over and over and over and over again. And it felt wierd, and uncomfortable because you made all these friends and you all had talked about how much the game rocked and you were never looking back.... and one by one those friends just... disappeared. You started to feel like you were at the tail end of a great party, most everybody had gone home, and what were you still doing there? It got creepy. You had to leave.

/shiver

CoH was EPIC letdown, really. SO much put into that game. Everything worked.. almost. It was like the most expensive practical joke ever.
i forgot all about the COH. Tons of my EQ buddies moved over to try it out. about 15 of us, and by the time everyone hit about 25 or so, they were done. The flying and character creation was cool, but outside of that, no dice. I gave my account away, and i tried about a year ago to see if i can reactivate it, and fuck, i forgot all my info. I knew no one was playing with the account still.
