EQ2 and Vanguard together. Because of EQ2's failure I had to go play WoW, and then had no escape from it because VG didn't pull out the win. I can't really say which was a bigger letdown. I was skeptical of VG, whereas I was hopeful for EQ2, but the features of VG are far closer to my heart.

I remember reading about Planetside thinking "Oh man a FPS and MMORPG combined? How can you go wrong?" Another one that comes to mind is Savage. For one guy, it's an RTS but for the people he's controlling it's an FPS. Great idea, but poorly executed. No one wanted to be told to mine gold, they wanted to go fight.
Since you mention "another one", I assume that you think that Planetside was a failure. In fact I think it was not. The game still has players fighting the very same maps for years now and that's not that bad of an archievement. It is true that Planetside had a few disasters of it's own though. The expansion wasn't that stellar and the introduction of BFRs cost them a lot of players, still Planetside is a lot of fun and the playerbase has a lot of cool people.

I reactivated for the free time two days ago and I like it. What makes me wonder though is the fact, that it still runs much worse than Team Fortress 2 on my machine and that's something I will never understand.

Talking about the biggest disappointment, I am not sure. I really didn't like SWG in the Beta, so I never gave it a try. Everquest 2 didn't exactly remind me of Norrath and EQ gameplay, so that was an obvious failure and finally with Vanguard I am not sure anymore. A lot of good reports are coming in lately, but overall the game is still way behind the expectations.

Everquest 2. It may have eventually become an okay game but its so far removed from its roots as to be unrecognizable. Turning Norrath into a bunch of fucking islands, are you kidding me? 24 goddamn classes doing 8000 dps each, constant special attack mashing, Ogre wizards, near meaningless weapons and armor, eleventy billion quests that you needed a group to complete, and the worst scaling game engine ever.

Star Wars Galaxies. Because when I think Star Wars, I think hair dressers and droid mechanics. Fuck you Koster.

Things I'm glad failed: Vanguard. No, hours of travel is NOT the fucking fun part you moron. And unless you have a billion dollars to spend you might want to consider a smaller world and some sort of instancing.

WoW PvP.

When WoW first released, I assumed it was going to be another amazing competitive game like War3 and Starcraft before it. I imagined there would be both large battles between the horde and alliance and intense rivalries between elite groups on either side, such as DAoC once had and I assumed WoW would have the same but even better.

It ended up being a great game all around, but the PvP is nothing like I would have imagined, and in my mind will always be a total failure.

If you mention EQ expansions, then even Kunark was a gigantic disappointment for me at first. It only stands out as one of the better expansions, because so many bad things happend later on. Luclin will course always be remembered as the ultimate failure in MMO history.

I was not expecting massive things from VG either so it was not a huge disappointment at release just frustrating.

I played FPS religiously for years, absolutely loved instagib CTF, Threewave, Weapons Factory Arena and was excited for the release of Quake IV....

I blame everything on the production costs honestly: how is having to spend 30+ million dollars to publish a failure? How do they feel when the budget is finished and they have to toss out what they have?

Other games were also a bit meh, hell, I find WoW-TBC a bit crappy too when analyzed deeply, but damn, the EQ2 delusion still hurts in a way.
I agree

EQ2 is the game that should of, could of, would of been good. But it failed, and they still haven't managed to fix it.

This.

Vanguard wasn't a disappointment for me becaues I knew early on the type of crap Bard wanted to put in the game -- long travel time, competing over spawns, etc. I was glad to see it fail.

Sticking with MMO's I have to go Vanguard and DDO. I bit into the VG apple of hype until I got into beta 2, and saw the train wreck coming down the tracks. DDO also gets a nod because they took, to my mind, what should have been the best of both worlds and instead did about the worst thing you could do with the title.

That's a dead on assessment. I was talking to an old ex-military friend of mine who now works for Blizzard about five months ago and his comments about WoW’s market strategy was very succinct "We made this game for 12 to 35 yr old people who have lots of time on their hands; we absolutely don't care about any other demographic. We won't spend any significant amount of money toward any other tastes. You can play RPG or FPS or SIMS etc. It would be best for you to stay out of our world—you will never matter to us."

As we age we realize we don't want to spend X amount of time fumbling through an evolving game. We develop other interests that co-op our time (like the opposite sex) and MMO's are specifically a young person’s genre. I've been looking at this site off and on for sometime and honestly haven't given a shit about what pixilated mob FoH has beaten for years. Even if all the FoH team was in their 30's to 50's I wouldn't be able to relate to them as their lifestyles somehow would afford them ad nausea amounts of time to raid, do dailies, crafting etc. EQ was enormous fun, but the thought of trudging through another MMO again makes me want to vomit.

Enjoy it while it lasts kids.

I don't know about Savage 1, but I tried Savage 2 earlier today. That was great fun. No mining operations. As long as you have a commander, he'll do all the building, mines operate themselves, and he has up to 3 Peons to do stuff like repairs and such. Players aren't expected to do anything but combat related actions.

The playerbase seems sort of smallish, but the game seems positively awesome from what a couple of hours could show me.

Three way tie between EQ2, LOTRO and WoW-TBC.

To use shitty real life analogies, EQ2 was like a blind date, hoping for an amazingly hot girl and Makata shows up at your door. LOTRO was a chick you met in a chat room with a great personality, really hot pictures and when you meet up she seems like everything you want in a woman. Then it turns out she has a penis. WoW-TBC is the girl of your dreams, but right now she's covered in shit. I still love her but we won't be fucking till she takes a goddamn shower.
