I just took the plunge and bought the Faydwer package after playing the trial to level 4. I'm eyeing a necromancer as I was always enchanted by their dots and soloing ability way back in the day.

However I recall that the last time I really checked (maybe 2002/2003?) they did nothing but supply mana to clerics in end game. Is that still how things are? Also I used to see a lot of threads about AoE kiting for end game, not sure how it is now. Is the Necromancer viable for this or do I basically just fear kite one mob at a time forever (and is this much slower exp?).

there is a mana spell necros use it now but it's not like it used to be. you cast on the mob it drains their mana and gives it to the group, most necros dont even keep it in their raid line up, suppose it depends on how nice of a guy you want to be.

as far as soloing now its mostly aggro kiting with your rogue pet backstabbing shit. or root doting if that's your thing(though not as efficent since you loose pet dmg)

some of the necro dots are shorter in their duration also making us slightly better in a group situation.

Can't speak for bards but in general yes, soloing is a bit easier than before. But in the end it's still EQ. Some classes can solo, others can not. The group scene is ok but it's nothing like back during heyday so if you are an offbeat class be prepared for a shitty time if you do not have friends.

Most XP, even today, will be got from groups. Good new's however is that family guilds and low level raid guilds alike are STARVING for players. If you can't get in one it means you didn't even try, and just be honest.

I apped to a low level raid guild explaining that I once played all the time, I am coming back but I have no idea if I will stick around, that I was not looking for handout loot or anything but just wanted to be with some people to ask questions and try new raids. They let me in with open arms and it gave me a pool of friends to group with and I even saw some raids I've never seen before.

Just about every class should be about to solo to 50, after that it gets back into the old EQ divides. For bard soloing, I tank could solo up thru BoT using heal pots, after that stuff started hitting to hard. Bards can't swarm kite anymore, but charm kiting is pretty good xp once you get it down. Bards are also still good in groups for boosting melee/caster dps and make excellent pullers. We had oodles of bards starting out but now its down too me and two others, one of them being an alt.

just resubbed today, ill think of what class to play while im at work, I have a vacation week next week so ill beable to hopefully level him quickly, im also probably going to buy 100k to start out, the account im using has every expansion up to GoD (i think) and including TSS
