No shit, this is how instances should be laid out. BRD was awesome in this regard. It was almost as good as Guk IMO.

I dont get why developers think that because it's an "instance" they have to design it so that you start at one end of it and finish at the other end and thats it, you're done.

LDON's instances were like this (and holy shit can you say massive copy and paste job?)

WoW's instances are the same. 2.4 just came out and Magister's Terrace is just friggin awful.

Any other games that follow suit?

Feralas for absolutely perfect forest atmosphere, Ashenvale a close second. STV for a believable jungle experience.

City of Mist, Unrest, NToV in EQ for some crazy memories.

Thats my beef with WOW instances, they feel like the same thing with rights instead of lefts with different textures.

What I think is funny is that people complained about camping the same named mob over and over to get the item they were after.

Now you get to do the whole fuggin zone over and over until it drops.

Ok.... slight derail. Sorry =(

Aesthetically I'm a real fan of Nagrand and Velkator's Labryinth.

From EQ East Commons, Blackburrow, "Field of bones" or whatever the iksar area was, and Lake of Ill Omen bring back the best memories it seems like. Of course it was my first MMO and I wasen't nearly as knowledgeable about the game as I am about WoW now. I'm sure the "First MMO" effect had some influence here.

In WoW Westfall, Deadmines, BRD, BRS/UBRS. I was in phase 2 of closed beta and running through the game for the first time with little to no use of Thottbot was amazing. Westfall in particular stands out for some reason as amazing. Playing through the leveling game with an entire community of other new players without using a info site like thottbott is a HUGE part of any MMO experience I think.

EDIT: Shit, how could I forget Crushbone. I played as a naive little halfling druid. Something about EC tunnel trade and GFay bank on TZ server was amazing. TZ was the humans v elves v darks v shorties server, 90% of the time it was just everyone vs the dark races (and it was still fair). Being up in the tree city sitting near the bank it really felt like the center of the entire game. I started right after the release of RoK I think so those two places were great hubs for trading/whatever. When I could finally start TP other ppl for plat, just sitting in GFay playing airport was so fun for some reason.

that's because they are. vanilla instances were very, very well done. as others have said, brd is a truly amazingly designed dungeon. top5 if not top3 all time. tbc onward, the instances are TERRIBLE. none of them are even worth going to once, let alone more than once.

the only one worth a damn is karazhan.

EQ - City of Mist. (Vex Thal runs a close second, but only when it was first opened and quite a bit darker.)

WoW - Stranglethorn Vale

I completely forgot about that zone until you mentioned it. I just went and looked up CoH zones and I think its "Dark Astoria." That one was pretty good, well for CoH anyways.

Blackburrow (EQ)
Guk (EQ)
Karnor's Castle (EQ)
Deadmines (WoW)
Blackrock Depths (WoW)

Top Favorite of all:
Westfall (WoW)
this zone perfectly evokes early spring before grass turns green/late fall in new england. I could drive 2 minutes from house and take pictures of some farm fields that would look identical to Westfall, love it.
