| They don't understand that games are still in the equivalent of the silent movie era. You're wasting your time discussing this here ![]() It's really simple: the game industry as a whole is slowly and ponderously moving away from a focus on graphics but it's going to be a good 2 to 3 years before the always behind, oh so incestuous MMOG industry realizes that and a good 2-3 more years before games using certain key upcoming technologies that really free up gameplay come out. Parallel to this, some more games trying to copy WOW's almost perfect execution of the diku hackNslash type game will fail. LIKE LEMMINGS. If they don't go splat they will only be moderately successful because whatever twist they try to add, in the end you get the same basic feeling/fun from the gameplay. The button presses don't get better than WOW. So there's no reason to switch. Then, after a few years and lots of innovation on the single player side such as the new way of thinking about character movement from Assassin's Creed and the upcoming Mirror's Edge, mostly destructible environments from the upcoming Battlefield: Bad Company, all the stuff coming in The Force Unleashed etc etc should have proven themselves to excite players and be financially viable gameplay (Almost 4 million sales say a few games doing the AC "parkour" stuff are bound to be announced this year). The key words of the previous paragraph are: FINANCIALLY VIABLE GAMEPLAY. Sad but oh so very true. By the time all that happens, there's bound to be a few exec/suit types who start considering adding all these things into a single game. Hey I know, I'll be different and have them added in a MMOG! And you'll finally get a first run MMOG that won't feel like same old. It's basically what happened with Everquest. The "vision" of what was the obvious next step had to be so obvious even a suit could see it. Smed was just the first suit to "see the light". Until then there's not much to do except enjoy WOW and it's little bros or switch to another hobby. |

| Dude, I know what all the bullshit in your post means. I just don't know why you posted it. Game evolution moves slow because it really doesn't need to move much faster. Right now the "same old same old" are still making money, and still keeping most people happy. It has nothing to do with the bullshit you're hinting around. |

I root for games where the griefers complain constantly that they are unable to achieve their 5th grade antics. I root for games where exploitive behavior is minimized to keep from trivializing challenges. I root for games where having limitations is part of the challenge, not part of the problem for cheaters/hackers to overcome. An MMO with true freedom gives every player a /kill, /teleport, and /spawn command to use when they feel like it. Otherwise, you are just limiting them way too much!! | |

You know, it's not unlike it has been for eternity. 90% of games are shit, always have been. There are so many games released every day that they all can't possible be appealing to everyone.

| Req is capable of many things. Wouldn't be surprised if he's the head honcho of Skynet.
