Want to talk about easy-mode?

Let's talk about starting Vanguard, not knowing anyone, and then 2 months later killing Kotasoth for a world first? Not to mention that best of the best W.

Want to keep talking?

Nice you are awesome. You, a person with no skill/gear/friends, killed a boss world first in a game lots of people play and care about after two month.

Oh wait no...

You killed a boss in a game noone plays!
That is the very definition of easy mode. How can you fail to get a world first in that game!?

Im guessing it has something to do with being able to count the subscribers on 2 hands.

Anyways...

Anyone want to talk about their Isle of Dawn impressions? I re-subbed for free and tried it out for a couple hours today. I had a good time, though nothing jumped out at me as super different from the last time I played (a year and a half ago). I didn't run into any significant bugs (or any, that I can remember), and things did seem to be a little bit more polished. There were enough people running around that the world didn't seem completely dead.

I'll probably play for the remainder of the free period... I'm not sure about after that.

PS: If you're going to say something stupid (i.e. make comparisons to WoW or talk about how VG sucks without pointing out anything new or interesting), just don't bother, and I encourage people to stop responding to such posts.

Okay, here's an interesting question for you Vanguard players: if not for the insanely crappy graphics optimization, engine, etc (which is one of the main barriers to entry when playing), do you think the underlying gameplay would be good enough for the game to fill a sizable MMORPG niche, or is it still trying to shake off the lack of polish that ruined the game's release? Details please.

The Isle of Dawn is great. I didn't notice any change in appearance of my characters though.

I still have many small issues with the game. One of them being that when you try to converse with a new NPC while you have a conversation with another NPC up, it won't let you. Instead of this signalling to close the old one and open a new one, it just forbids you to proceed. I imagine it's in there to prevent bugs with diplomacy, but it's annoying and unintuitive.

Ah well. The Isle was solid, but as soon as I left it was pretty big mess.

As someone that enjoys crafting I'm consistently frustrated at the dearth of harvesting nodes in the world. Work orders are dull. I want to build gear for myself to give me an advantage slaying beasts. I don't want to build frying pans for 20% experience to the next level so I can make oven mitts. So I need nodes to get lots of copper and tin, and you have to walk miles to find a handful. ~blegh

Well, if you weren't making frying pans and oven mitts and other vender/quest fodder to level up, you'd be making 8000 Copper Gloves, singlehandedly flooding the market. Its a problem I've seen in mmo after mmo.

Now maybe if the crafting in an mmo is a total pyramid scheme (lvl 1->2 takes you 85 copper gloves. lvl 2->3 you do a 3 copper glove, 4 misc widgets combine for super copper gloves. Lvl 3->4 is 4 super copper gloves+2 copper gloves + widgits for the mega glove, etc etc etc) then having every Joe Noob make 85 copper gloves may work out. But very few mmo's go that route.

In the end, it seems a system where you can make copper gloves to wear (and minor exp/skillup/whatever) OR make vender/quest fodder widgets (for your BIG exp/skillup/whatevers) for your Lvl 1->2 progression strikes me as the least offensive.

I don't have a problem with work orders existing for leveling in general. I have a problem being unable to find copper to make my copper gloves. For that matter, the questing available on the Isle of Dawn made work orders irrelevant. These are more fun and more involved than work orders, which really fall into the category of grinding despite taking up space in the quest log. I haven't gotten to the point where I'm forced to perform work orders, and I hope I don't.

Can you bind the crafting skills to the keyboard, at all? I haven't figured this one out. Clicking is distasteful and slow, and if I can find a way to press 1, 6, 4, ALT 2 instead I prefer it.

The main problem I see is engame content and longevity. Once you spend 3 months in APW there isn't much else to do :/ That is the main barrier I see to the game.

** disclaimer ** I quit playing about 3 months ago, so if they've released some new stuff I didn't know about it.

Define sizable. 20K, 50K tops? If you consider that sizable, then sure. If you're looking for 100k subs or more, not ever. There's simply not enough to do. As Hauwk said, the endgame is pretty minimal - one raid zone and a handful of overland (perma-camped 3 day respawn) targets. Once you get to level 50 and farm some raid targets, what the hell are you going to do? I suppose if you're a serious alta-holic you can roll new classes, but I'm not sure how killing spiders with a ranger is any different than killing spiders with a Blood Mage.

Players like to develop characters - gear them up, watch them grow, do new and exciting things. In VG that's just not possible. You get to the endgame and find it really is the endgame.

Shouldn't the experience of getting to maximum level be the development/gear up/growing process?
