Someone asked the same question yesterday, and yeah that's pretty much it. There's very very basic crafting, some raids and stuff, but endgame is supposedly building your town, and raiding keeps on the border kingdoms. None of which was actually beta tested.

WoW had what, 4 group instances, 1 raid instance, and 3 single raid bosses? Then there was a 4 month wait until anything else was introduced, and similar gaps moving forward? We were fine there, same as pretty much every other MMO.

AoC's 80 game looks quite like the industry launch standard to me, without having been there. Supposedly 3-4 raid instances (which probably suck, MC style), some group stuff, and good reasons to go PvP.

I've been trying to patch this game for 5 days now. The patcher continually hangs up and doesn't move for literally hours and it's never gotten beyond 20%.

Ya, the first order of business for them is gonna be adding a few more quests in they have almost enough to get through to 55 without any real grinding, they need a few more quests in the late 40s maybe. Then from 60-80 its prolly only like half done and they need to flesh that out maybe add a few new outdoor zones or maybe the borderlands will have quests for that level. After that they can focus on the end game.. but the content picture isnt to bleak, prolly slightly worse than wow was at launch in terms of gaps you have to grind through, but if borderlands is another whole high level quest zone i might be totally off here.

EU early access been brought forward ?

From the account creation page :

Early access begins in both EU and US on May 17th, 2008 and is an unique opportunity for pre-order customers to enter Hyboria before the late-comers are washed up on Tortage Beach at launch. A download will be available from May 10th!


There are early access clients files up to be downloaded at Funcom , but Funcom haven't announced them yet. Might be best to wait in case they change anything. Actually they just took the US one down.

EU one just disappeared as well. But yes, they should be available today according to the account page.

I should seriously stop leveling on closed so I don't start feeling the burnout before launch.

EU gets 3more days of early access. That is, if they manage to get the servers up and stable. Chances are it's the prepreprerelease beta still, they'll test how the server crash due to normal load, and try to fix it for US.

By the way, the latest OB patch was actually very good -- I no longer crash every 10 minutes, if this keeps up it's very good news. Unexpected good news, I like it.

If you order online from places like BestBuy you will not get a pre-order code, so you cannot do the 3 day headstart. Its likely at this point in time a new online order from anywhere except perhaps Amazon will not give you a pre-order code.

You can open up a pre-order box at retail stores (BestBuy, etc) and see if they have pre-order codes in them. No clue if they do or do not. The pre-order code is a 14 digit/letter code, completely seperate from the retail release code.

The redeemable items (mount, bow, etc) will be redeemable after May 20th, using a ingame command (/redeemitem or something like that).

So to sum up: right now you can create a Funcom account and register AoC if you have a pre-order key - 14 digit/letter key. Amazon.com, as of a few days ago, was giving you this key immediately if you pre-ordered, and you can go ahead and cancel the pre-order and "keep the key" (kinda shady on your part of course, but they don't invalidate the key if you cancel).

Once you create your funcom account, you can pay an extra $5 to Funcom for "early access". That lets you start downloading the client May 14th, and start playing May 17th. There is no way to start playing AoC on May 17th unless you create your account with a pre-order key AND pay the $5. Even if you've ordered the collectors edition from wherever, if you currently DO NOT have a pre-order key you cannot play May 17th.

Those who pay the $5 get 10 days unlimited account (ie play until May 27th), after that you must attach a valid retail AoC key to your account to continue playing.

It doesn't feel like a grind to me. But they need to make different starting locations or allow you to start a toon at 20 once you've leveled a toon or two past Tortage. Great the first time around, ok the second (lucky for class specific quests) but more than that, it becomes a grind for the first 20 levels.

I wouldn't say soloing sucks more than soloing in any other MMORPG though. I've pretty much soloed through 20. Even though it was rough at parts, I enjoyed it. Some of the quests in AoC are excellent and overall some of the best I've seen in the genre. Now after I've done them three times, I could see powerleveling through with a couple other players. After Tortage, at least on a PvP server, you better be in group.
