Let's look at the gross profit from the box sales and subscriptions and compare those to Sims box sales, say from the original of each.
If you are talking profit then WoW is god which I said earlier. It may not be in damn near every house hold in america but it doesnt have to be when the millions pour in every month.

MMOs = $$$, no one is going to dispute that fact. I dont doubt that EA has made billions from The Sims but WoW will make, or has made more then The Sims has made EA I am sure.

The argument that MMOs sell less than non-MMOs can probably made in a general sense. But using WoW as an example makes as much sense as adding up every Sims game from all time to diminish Blizzard's MMO.

You could put WoWs sales in a list of nonMMOs (single games) and it would be ahead of most of them easily. That's the only point I was trying to make. :P

I know and I do see your point. I just see games like Sims, and Madden and Halo as being more of a mass market product then any MMO out which was kind of the whole point to the discussion heh. Sims is like barbie almost, make some new furniture, add in a car and a haunted house and package it up and sell to the masses.... and the masses eat it up. We see something new from WoW every couple years.

It is prob something you could go in circles with endlessly though so I guess we can all just agree to disagree and not derail anymore

I've seen more commercials for WoW than Madden, Halo and the Sims combined.

Granted Halo was on a Burger King cup and there was a show on ESPN that had people playing Madden vs. NFL players, but WoW is in a fucking Toyota commercial, it's endorsed by Capt. Kirk and Mr. T and it has an Office Space commercial. I don't know how much more mainstream shit can get.

I'd be willing to bet the yearly profits from WoW versus the Sims line are fairly similar.

There are ten million people out there playing WoW at least once a week. That has to be more than any other major title, MMO or not, as far as active playerbase and hence mindshare and cultural impact.

Trying to reach sales like Sims is retarded though for a MMO. Why it may not be a mass market product it still makes more money over all. Hell even games like EQ2 make a shit load of money just because monthly subs > raw units sold. Good luck to his APB game I guess.
When I've got Totoya commercials rocking WOW it's a tad hard to dismiss it as NOT mass-market.

Especially Toyato commercials during a god damn NFL game in prime time. I was at a crowded bar during a Monday/Sunday night game and that commercial came on and I heard several different groups around me talk about WOW.

It's mainstream for sure.

Your right, it is apples and oranges. How much is Wow's daily expense compared to just a pure sale for a game like Pokemon. Marketing? Servers? etc. Net is king, isn't it?

I mean that's why we pay 15 bones right? because they are poor the devs told me
