The Sims franchise has sold over 83,000,000 units world wide as of 2007. How many units do you think WoW has sold taking into account that not all 10 million accounts = box sale. Digital download and I guess China doesnt do box sales at all? This is just box sales here... if you start adding in how many people have prob downloaded The Sims then I am sure that number fucking sky rockets.

Lets put it this way just to make it as simple as possible. There are -alot- more homes world wide with a copy of The Sims sitting on their shelf then there are homes with a copy of WoW. That is what he ment by mass market. This is not to put WoWs numbers down because when you take into account monthly subs then WoW makes more money then any other franchise but that is not what this discussion was about. More people have had games like the Sims and Halo brought to them then MMOs. It is easier to get games like Sims/Halo to the masses because accounts and fees dont matter.

So one franchise, that has how many games and expansions? has outsold WoW. Great.. I'm pretty sure that anyone in their right mind would LOVE to be 2nd in sales behind the Sims.

If this guy wants to challenge the Sims and thinks his APB game can do that... well, I guess he isn't one of the aforementioned people in their right mind.

That is the whole point. His comment was about MMOs not being a real mass market type of thing and he was not talking out of his ass when he said that. The problem was that he mentioned WoW without stroking the shaft and cupping the balls so the fanboys got a little testy.

Trying to reach sales like Sims is retarded though for a MMO. Why it may not be a mass market product it still makes more money over all. Hell even games like EQ2 make a shit load of money just because monthly subs > raw units sold. Good luck to his APB game I guess.

I don't care if he strokes WoW off or not, but at least come correct about it. You were the one who said 10 million sales wasn't shit when yes, yes it is. It's pretty much the creamiest shit in the whole pile of shit. You can count the titles that have done better on your fingers... out of hundreds of thousands of titles released.

Either way, one game means nothing. I did think that NPD chart was amusing given he singled out the sims, but he made a blanket statement, and most games are lucky to break 1 million these days.

I do find the 83m number unbelievable though...do you have a source for that sales data? That number is impressive indeed, and would have nothing to do with typical game sales.

But 83m is a totally reasonable goal so long as you aren't an MMO? Lol.

Heh, just for fun

I guess I could post this one game franchise and say that non-MMOs have no business selling as many boxes as WoW?

Here is a list of the top 10 PC games of all time:

Quote:
The Sims (16 million shipped,[145] 29 million including expansions)[146]
Lineage 2 (14 million customers)[147]
The Sims 2 (13 million)[148]
--The Sims 2: Pets [expansion pack] (5.6 million)[149]
--The Sims 2: Seasons [expansion pack] (1 million)[149]
World of Warcraft (10 million subscribers)[150]
--World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade [expansion pack] (3.5 million)[150][151]
StarCraft (9.5 million, includes StarCraft: Brood War)[152]
Half-Life (8 million)[153]
Myst (6 million)[154]
Guild Wars (5 million, includes Factions, Nightfall, and Eye of the North)[155]
Cossacks: European Wars (4 million)[156]
Diablo II (4 million)[157]
--Diablo II: Lord of Destruction [expansion pack] (1 million)[157]
Which is a little out of date since it still has TBC at 3.5 million, which is a number from last March.

That was the entire franchise I imagine, which means every "The sims" game created. By comparison, the wacraft franchise would be significantly higher then 10 million.

Though I could be wrong.

Its not that unbelieveable man because its a franchise number. They mass sell that shit waaaaay more then MMOs do. WoW takes 2 years to release an expansion. Games like Sims can produce that shit WAY faster.

Also The Sims is not the number one franchise according to this. The #1 is just going to shock people I am sure

Let's just call it the "Blizzard Franchise" and lump in every Blizzard game. That is about as fair as lumping the entire Sims franchise together.

Nope. Diablo/Warcraft together doesnt do a whole lot for their numbers. Sims (The Sims btw, not the whole sims world. Sim City would add another 18 million if we wanted to play that game.) shows at nearly 100 million as a franchise, 165 million for Pokemon and 200 million for Mario.

Warcraft sold 19 million, diablo is 17 million. Starcraft is.... not listed? Hmm that not sell that well?

Not to mention when you compare box sales and subscriptions combined for an MMO. I might be heading into apples/oranges, but consider the fact that 2 months of a sub for WoW in NA/Europe roughly equals the cost of one Sim expansion. Let's look at the gross profit from the box sales and subscriptions and compare those to Sims box sales, say from the original of each.

So 100m all time for the Sims franchise, but 83m of it was in the year 2007?

Just doesn't seem right, even for a whole franchise for a single year, it's just a retarded big number. Maybe I'm just totally clueless.

EDIT: I just read it wrong: 'As of 2007'. That is a lot more believable, I'm an idiot.
