MMO where only 100 people can be together in the same game? Yay? I guess it isn't such a leap from instances with only x players in them.

He did GTA1.

Looking at this again, it would probably be better as a BF2-style game. 32/64 players in a contained map. Gang team has objectives, enforcement has to stop them. I think that would be much more fun.

I like how he tries to imply that WoW doesn't have mass market appeal. I can garauntee no MMO he ever makes will have as many subscribers.

That said, the design looks fairly solid. I think you guys are being too skeptical. There's no reason that the game can't do everything described in a fairly open world. It doesn't have to be instances, just dynamic hotspots.

Uh, it doesn't. There will never be as many people who play wow as those who play Counter Strike, Halo 3, etc. MMOs are a niche market. It may be a rapidly growing market, but even in gaming, it is a niche. WoW does not have mass market appeal, because of the very nature of MMOs. APB has the right idea for making an MMO with true mass market appeal, but they're also ignoring many good things about the market. I doubt mass market appeal will be achieved by Jones's new product, but it won't be because he was wrong about WoW.

QFT.

All fanboy/hater bullshit aside 10 million people isnt shit compared to other games. MMOs as a whole dont even come close to owning the market. We MMO players are still a small piece of the pie in reality. The people over at blizzard would give anything to have the numbers that The Sims does for example hehe. I dont know numbers but most homes that own a computer prob have a copy of The Sims laying around hehe.

Edit: I do think that some day MMOs will be pretty main stream and most people who play video games will be subscribed to one MMO or another. WoW is the step in the right direction but the day I am talking about people will prob look at 10million subs and giggle. Kinda like we do now looking at EQ2 and EQ1. Back in the day 200k subs was pretty hot.

I think Crackdown is more of a pointer to how this will play out than GTA1.

The fuck you guys talking about? Counter-strike is nothing compared to MMO's anymore, the spotlight has been off of CS for ages now. Halo 3 doesn't have a comparable amount of players either but it still sold amazingly, and it's hard to compare FPS and MMO players because you can easily sit down and play an MMO for 12 hours or more - FPS games, not so much. I know blizzard has a tendency to inflate their numbers but that doesn't negate the fact that they have a ridiculous number of servers, all of them with a good amount of people online at any given time.

Also, does APB stand for anything or did they decide to skip the foreplay and just put 3 letters together that we'd inevitable start to refer to the game by?

What alternate universe do you live in? 10 million units is superb for box sales ALONE, let alone any kind of subscription.

I'm positive they have had more than 10 mil. boxes sold in NA and Europe alone.

Has Halo 3 even hit 10 million? Wii Play? Any single purchase title in recent memory?

According to this list, it's pretty short. Most of them are SMB and Pokemon.. and Tetris.

Following the ESA-trailed results, NPD released the top 10 best-selling PC games of 2007 to online outlets including Gamasutra, revealing two major franchises - Vivendi/Blizzard's World Of Warcraft and Electronic Arts' The Sims - dominating much of the charts. The full run-down is as follows:

1. World Of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade (Vivendi) - 2.25 million
2. World Of Warcraft (Vivendi) - 914,000
3. The Sims 2: Seasons Expansion Pack (Electronic Arts) - 433,000
4. Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Activision) - 383,000
5. Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars (Electronic Arts) - 343,000
6. Sim City 4 Deluxe (Electronic Arts) - 284,000
7. The Sims 2 (Electronic Arts) - 281,000
8. The Sims 2: Bon Voyage Expansion Pack (Electronic Arts) - 271,000
9. Age Of Empires III (Microsoft) - 259,000
10. The Sims 2: Pets Expansion Pack (Electronic Arts) - 236,000

I'm too lazy to look up the NPD numbers for Halo3 or CS, but you need a reality check. Most games don't sell nearly as well as WoW, not even close.
