+5 Internets | Yeah, so my gaming laptop is actually from dell's small business division. It's only used for gaming sometimes but it's not massive by any means 15.4 inch screen no more then 6 pounds. I bought november of last year, core2duo, 8600gt 256mb, 2 gigs of ram (upgraded that myself since dell's 1gig->2gig option was 3x the cost of 2 gigs of laptop ram), 160gig hd, for a bit under $1000 after taxes and shipping. You can scale down the power of the gfx card and the processor when they aren't under load. I need to find some kind of bios unlocker to undervolt the processor though which i haven't gotten around to doing. When gaming this thing puts out tons of heat and with most laptops even non-gaming ones i've owned using it on a lap wasn't an option due to vent blockage anyway. $4500 is fucking retarded... Probably because of the outer art. I've noticed some pc makers charging retarded amounts for outer art up to the thousands. A friend pointed them out to me, not sure which site it was. |

| I am looking at buying a laptop for a combination of work/gaming. I looked at Dell, but quite frankly, they have a pretty poor reputation. I have known too many people that had Dell laptops break down just outside of warranty. And Dell tells them too bad, so sad. I also like my customer service reps to speak intelligible English. I am in the market, and buying one in the next several months, but it sure as hell won't be a Dell. They don't back up their product problems. You'd be a fool to pay for a $4500 Dell laptop and get no support if something breaks. |

| They use IBM around my work, they are solid. Lenvo I think is also IBM and are said to be solid as well. But to be honest, If not for gaming, how can you go wrong with a $500 dell laptop? Even if it does break outside of warranty who cares? Its only 5bones. Check gotapex.com periodically they usually list deals from Dell, Lenvo, Hp...etc. |

It's Official: Dell Beams Up Alienware 03.22.06 by Mark Hachman Dell Inc. confirmed Thursday that it had acquired boutique PC vendor Alienware, a move that will add some zing to the company's image. Although Dell's acquisition was widely anticipated, Alienware chief executive Nelson Gonzalez said that his company will remain a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dell, continuing its own brand, design, sales and marketing, and support. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. For consumers, the purchase will mean that Alienware will now access Dell's well-known supply-chain efficiencies, ideally reducing wait times for new PCs that Alienware executives said have swelled to as much as a month or more. Interestingly, the deal also means that a PC containing a processor from Advanced Micro Devices will finally contribute to Dell's bottom line. Gonzalez said that to expand Alienware's product line with more, highly-tuned boutique products, the company needed more resources. Although the company sells its PCs to customers in Japan, Korea, and Asia, Alienware didn't have the cash to fund the worldwide expansion it needed, he added. "We were at a crossroads, we were at a point in time where we had to make a decision to go public or to perhaps merge with another entity if it made sense," Gonzalez said. "There were very few organizations out there that we would do this with—and there's only one that I could think of, and that was Dell, just because of the similarities in terms of the direct business model, and that we have a lot of similarities with the [company]. The problem is that we were at these crossroads, we needed to raise capital, and we had never raised capital at this company from day one." "We needed to get bigger, and we needed to release more products," Gonzalez added. "We do our own designs and our own form factors, and that costs a lot of money, frankly." That won't come at the expense of the Alienware brand, however. Gonzalez said that Alienware PCs would not carry a Dell logo, and that he would report directly to Jim Schneider, Dell's chief financial officer. "I think that you'll find it very hard to find the Dell name on the [Alienware] web site," he said. "The reality is that you're not going to see a whole lot of changes," added Mark Vena, Alienware's vice president of marketing and the former chief of Dell's Dimension consumer PC business.

Hell, even the cheapo ones make me uneasy. I built my dad's dual core rig for under 600. Laptop wise it seems to be $500 for a celeron and some random shit, and fucking vista of course (after having a horrible experience with formatting a dell desktop and not being able to find any drivers for the chinese hardware I'd be afraid to format a laptop). I know you can find deals but so far none of them have made me jump to buy one. and I laughed at that Alienware/Dell statement. The guy actually sounds run-down at going with Dell, which while obvious, you'd expect him to have on his happy-go-lucky PR face. "We're very excited at the possibilities..." blah blah. I'm sure at least one non-combat pet freak got one just for that.

I can also comment on Hypersonic since I have owned 2 of their gaming laptops. They are powerful but I prefer the dell for just general overall feel and practicality. If you want a 'true' gaming laptop though hypersonic is probably the way to go. I'll just stick with my Dell from here on out.

| The bad thing about the new Alienware systems is that the towers are actually PLASTIC. Their old systems were aluminum. So, you're paying 4-7k$ for a hunk of plastic that you'll most likely break trying to get out of the box. lol! I'd love to get a laptop, but I'm very weary of who to buy from. I want power for possible gaming, but I also want mobility. :|
