Sounds like all the old games are about to be liquidated, tbh.

This doesn't bode well.

Goodbye, EQ.

Holy fuck, that bolded sentence doesnt look good for all current SOE employees. I wonder if they are going to do Fan Faires any more?

Kinda sad because I bet Fan Faires are dead now and I wonder if all those people are gonna have jobs now :/

Merry Christmas indeed.

If this shit is true, i am done with EQ and VG. Fuck that. No disrespect to India, but they seriously will ruin the MMO's. I doubt many developers would move to India. They couldnt pay me 200 k a year to move over there, fuck that.

Zapak.com - Free Online Games India, Play Free Online Flash Games, Multiplayer Games, Download Free Games and More

A free online game site is buying SoE for 300 million?

Seems a little suspicious to say the least.

Edit: Hm

I can't help but feel suspicious as well, but jesus fuck. Even if it's a hoax, it's fucking hilarious that it's so believable.

Edit: Shit is looking more authentic every moment.

Agreed.

Why would SoE want to bow out of a market they have been so successful in?

You are assuming they are still successful, or profitable enough to make the hassle worth it. Apparently they aren't. $300 mil is peanuts. SOE must be losing money at this point.

They've had numerous gigantic failures over the last few years though. Considering they made $150 million a year and are selling for $300 million, it might imply that they're just getting as much as they can for a quick deal to get rid of the branch while entirely starting over from scratch.

As for suspicions, i'm wary of any gaming websites/company that refers to itself as a "portal"... this means MSN/Yahoo spyware games to me.

It's not hard to imagine. Sony is enormous. The game industry is getting bigger every day, not to mention the recent success of WoW for MMOs. SOE was loaded with baggage games, created inferior products, had a horrid reputation with destroyed IPs.

If I were Sony, I'd want my gaming divisions to be on top of their shit with how profitible the gaming industry is. If my initial foray into the genre was doing poorly I'd certainly want to start fresh.

Going from investing $100m over 3 years to $300m at one time is a huge jump in investiture. Plus, the article mentions that SoE has been on the auction block, and yet no one has heard anything about this? This still seems like speculation to me, but who knows.

On a side note, it's pretty weird that I have the DiscoveryHD channel on in the background, and it's a show about India.
