FYP a bit to reflect my take on it.

  2. Too many skills available. There was no uphill climb of gaining skills and they had hundreds (yes hundreds) of redundant skills. You have these available at the start and just wonder "wtf".
  3. Undefined genre. It was not a MMORPG and not a FPS. It was sort of both but not really. There was no world to explore but it was too MMO for FPS people. FPS people want guns not swords.
That said, I think you guys should try it out because they had a unique combat system that does not use mana. You build up charges with lesser damage spells and close with the big hit spells once you have enough charges. PoTBS uses a similiar system. Also, they has 4 schools of spells and one school would subtract charges when used from another school. This prevents a very high damage spell caster build to also be a uber healer for example. I think it was a nice system. Also, this makes a classless character system. You are limited on the abilities you can use so you have to plan accordingly. This is great. No need to reroll an alt. Just switch out your abilities.

Did we even play the same game?

The Fury I played had a ton of skills but you gradually unlocked them via quest NPCs where you had to use abilities of a certain element to gain points in that element, which then allowed you to choose spells from that element pseudo-quest line. Past that you could buy the skills off of the vendors for those you skipped.

You started out with a cap on how many skills or weapons/armor you could equip which got raised as you gained levels. It was an interesting mix of getting good armor on and getting enough skills.

When you started out, yes, you probably got your ass kicked but the concept was that just by using your largely ineffective abilities you levelled up. The only thing you missed out on from having weak abilities and low armor was the quality of reward you got from getting crushed. Of course there were vendors where you could essentially purchase gear anyway, so it balanced itself out in the long run.

I don't know about the undefined genre bit: it was guildwars without the PVE aspect thrown in. "Small Scale Arena PVP game" sounds about right. The distinction that needs to be made is that it was an FPS - but an FPS with most abilities auto-targeted, your target locked on and autofacing, and little or no "aiming."

I did enjoy how healers in the game were basically gods... but that just solidified a team really would dominate any pug without any real effort.

In other words, as a new player you use your worthless skills and bend over as you get owned in order to level up...

You have the option of "leveling up" somewhat by gaining points from PvP to obtain new skills, however they also gave you the option to just buy all the skills up front as a micro transaction.

Determining the right skill to equipment setup is still in the game and very nice. It is a lot of fun determining the right build. I still play so I am still enjoying the game.

You are correct, we can classify Fury with Guildwars as a CORPG. Good writeup here on CORPG also: Is a CORPG in your future?

F13 Interview

F13.net - Usefully Cynical Commentary » Interview/Postmortem with Adam Carpenter of Auran

In the post release reviews, journalists were hopping in and getting matched against some of the best players in the game. This resulted in them being slaughtered which isn’t a fun experience for anyone, especially when you are learning a new game. Predictably, this meant the game was ‘stupid’ and not fun for anyone. This easily changes a person’s mindset so that they are no longer trying to find the good in the game and are instead looking for all the bad things.

Counteracting this issue has been a major focus for us leading up to Fury’s first content update. In a classic MMOG, you spend most of your time killing Mobs and occasionally PVP. When you do decide to PVP, if you get your ass kicked, you can go back to the safety of PVE. In Fury, that safety net doesn’t exist. So instead of going back to PVE, they quit the game and tell all their friends not to play. With Age of the Chosen, we’re beginning to add an essential safety net that will allow player to learn the game.

So it is like a WoW Alliance BG PUG simulator? I can see why it didn't catch on.

That's pretty accurate, Hachima. The other part was that the only people who stuck around for any length of time were the really hardcore WoW Arena folks from #bg9. So you had people who'd been playing together for multiple years at this point working as a team with nearly maxed out characters and because the stats were fairly simple, they earned a ton of cash and gambled up a ton of really good gear.
