I am not sure they would risk making the only MMORPG they have comming out and the replacement for WOW a sci-fi MMORPG that might not draw the subs like a classic elves, dwarfs, dungeons, and dragons world.
Except during the Diablo Q&A the designer basically said 'This is a Diablo game and we want a Diablo game to play like an action game not like an MMO.' That and the Rob Pardo interview saying they are exploring doing a Sci-Fi MMO and see no reason why a Sci-Fi MMO could not compete with fantasy MMOs if done well.

I think by foundation, he meant to compare D3 to Warcraft 3 as 'foundation' for WoW.

Starcraft 2 could easily be such a foundation as well.

It seems more likely to me that they would try to capture MORE of the MMO market by doing something other than the classic elves/dwarfs/ogres type of game in an MMO.

It seems to me like plenty of people would be excited for that change. Meanwhile, as has been stated, obviously if there are some who don't like the sci fi stuff for an mmo, then WoW is not going anywhere. It could easily be supported for a very long time, and quite cheaply I might add [releativly so]

There's been a number of hints over the past 2-3 years that there are actually 2 MMOs in development at Blizzard right now, one has been going on over 2 years and the other started less than a year ago. Regardless I doubt we'll see much before 2010 in that area.

Yeah, thats what I meant. D3 would be the game that a future MMORPG would be based off of much like WC3 was the jumpoff point for WOW.

Either way, if Blizzard does a MMORPG based off of the SC world I will certainly try it. They have never let me down with a game yet, they know how to produce fun and addicting games.

I was kind of let down that the new game announcement was D3. I really want a quality non-fantasy MMO (didn't like EvE) so I was really hoping that they would announce the Starcraft MMO. Ah well, I am sure it is currently being developed and I just have to wait a couple years.

I was onboard Jumpgate until I read they were going to have dogfighting combat. That is just fucking retarded in an MMO. How the hell are you going to shoot things when you are lagging all to hell?

Looking back I was the sixth post in that thread and I said exactly the same thing. At least I am consistent.

Anyway, even though I am bitching about D3 I am sure to buy it. I picked up Titan Quest a few days ago on the cheap shelf and am having fun with that little Diablo clone. My dreams of running around in Space Marine armor will have to be put on hold for now.

Dogfighting is one of the most lag-insensitive game models. Back in the modem days combat flight sims were one of the more widely known multiplayer (dare I say MMO?) genres. The reason is that airplanes change speed and direction relatively slowly, so server going with the last velocity vector if client is lagging is much better estimate than in FPS-like games. Also, you're not spamming buttons all the time and there's no "target out of 5 yard range" hell as there's no melee classes.

And don't expect lag like you get in EVE. That game is sooo furbared when it comes to software architecture.

FYI.. In one of the Dev panels they said that that video of the Barbarian getting his head bitten off. That wasn't a boss. He said it was just another monster. I forget which dev panel and I'm to lazy to go back and listen to all of them again..

Where's the Pardo interview with him saying that?

According to Pardo, a big, successful, sci-fi MMO simply hasn't been seen yet.
wat

Isn't EvE the third highest population MMO ever behind L2 and WoW?

It is impossible to know the timetables now, but I have a hunch that World/Universe of Starcraft will have to compete with the presumptive KOTOR MMO that Bioware and Lucas Arts are developing. Competition like that should push the quality of development into a whole new level.

All this talk about a new mmo from blizzard is all nice and all and it gets me excited too. Especially if its sci-fi based. But lets not forget that this is Blizzard were taking about. And that some of us will be middle aged men by then and you 20 sometings will be in your 30's by the time you see a new mmo by blizzard.

Its like a thread about when the next time a fault line moves a whole foot, but it moves millimeters a year.
