I could just imagine the legendary thread if this ever was implemented in Wow. They won't let us kill Illidan!

It's Darkness Falls, you know the best PvP zone idea ever created... finally copied. It was the best economic zone, it encouraged PvP, you couldn't control it and keep control of it at the same time if you wanted to farm to address population imbalance.

Really it was brilliance, it's like every MMO dev since didn't learn the lessons from classic pre-ToA DAoC at all when it should be the template for modern MMO PvP. And screw UO fanbois in advance. =p

Speaking of PvMP, how did that system turn out? I only played LoTRO in beta and never did PvMP. Is it a good system? How does it stack up against PvP in games like WoW and DAoC?

Its pretty darn fun in my opinion. You can play as a pre generated monster, or as your own character. the monsters can gain ranks and then gain more abilities, they have a trait system called corruptions, which allow the monsters to spec.

the ettenmoors is about the size of the shire, with a bunch of towns, bridges, and other strategic locations spread out. The primary form of PVP is joining a raid (24 people). The leader of the raid directs the movement of the raid through voice chat, so there is a learning curve for the names of places. you can travel in a small group, but you are far more vulnerable. warg gank squads tend to roam the moors and can be quite deadly to solitary freeps running to join a group.

burglars, loremasters and hunters reign supreme as far as pvp, crowd control and ranged dps make the most difference. guardians, champions and captains can make a difference if played well, but they arent going to be the stars of the combat. minstrels are pretty straightforward.

each side can fight to take control of towns. when this happens, high level npcs will spawn. there are a ton of quests concerning taking control of towns, killing particular npcs in the zone, and also of course, killing types of PVMP monsters. you can get ranks, which allow you to buy nice pvp equipment and weapons. there are also pvp titles available.

as for the combat itself, i find it to be fast paced and fun. through the use of voice chat and raid assist targets (usually we have 3 or 4) the raid can get a good feel of whats going on in the chaos. I play a champion, one of the most gimp classes in the moors, yet i still find it enjoyable. most of the time i guard minstrels, as monster warg packs will stealth in to pounce the minstrels just prior to a charge. hamstring, and my AoE stuns help the minstrels survive the intial attack. If pitched melee battles occur, i get to run in and do some big AoE damage.

one known criticism of the pvp is the amount of CC availabe. aoe roots, stuns, mezzes, and slows, are responsible for the majority of reknown, as creeps/freeps are retreating. weavers webbing, or hunters rooting targets that lag behind while the lines move. Personally i dont see the issue, mostly people get ganked because they arent moving or communicating properly with the position of the raid, and find themselves exposed.

All in all, i find it a fun, exciting and well implemented aspect to the game. i mostly do pve stuff, but i like the option to go and fight some pvp once in a while.

I have a lot of fun some nights. It really depends on the raid leader. Some of them want to "win" which involves running into a tower, hiding there till the enemy pulls an npc, then running out and attacking the enemy then. This can get really boring with long delays. The leaders that want to run around behind the enemy and confuse them and take risks make my night much more fun.

Oh, and if a dev is reading this, put a fucking /waypoint command in please.

this is quite true. raiding in the moors is like raiding in pve. usually i run with my kinship. it can really suck to pvp with a crappy group with an inexperienced leader.

Being creative can really up the reknown you get in a night. splitting your forces, luring creeps and using all sorts of tricks can really surprise the enemy. If you can coordinate and execute well, thats when the reknown starts pouring in!
