Didn't read the last few pages, getting sleepy...

How are Necros now? I quit back in KoS days, haven't played since. I have a 70 assassin, but thought I'd try a necro out (I can only assume at this point Sarnaks can be necros, but whatever, some kind of caster I'm sure they can be something). How are they on raids, and soloing? How long til I could get caught up with my ridiculously busy schedule if I can play hardcore on weekends and a few hours/night? Keep in mind I have a few dozen plat and a 70 character at my disposal. Is a few dozen plat still a good amount of money?

Also, my machine is rather beastly compared to before. I have a 8800 Ultra with a new 6850 core2duo. Can I raid with full graphics and stuff? =p I hated riding around on my nightmare slowboatin it cuz I was so addicted to firey horse-mode.

Anywho, if anyone's on Nagafen I'll probably poke my head around, send me a PM sometime. non pvp servers are snoozefest in this game, or I'd join you guys in mistwalkers.

Def go with AB if you want to have a relative shot at grouping that late at night. I'm leveling a char on CB w/ my main being on AB and I haven't been able to find crap for groups almost at all from 1-49 so far on CB =P

Pick whatever race you want since you can betray evil if that is your thing. Darklight woods + Neriak quests though can net you 1-20 w/ like 20 AA in a solid day of playing if you know what you're doing and it's actually fun since you don't run all over the damn place to do everything like gfay/cl/antonica.

I have a 70 Assassin. Sucks ass to solo even at 70 unless I'm mowing down greens/blues. My SK solos really well. Warden solos so/so. My dirge solos surprisingly well w/ sta line though I finally swapped to dual wield once I got out of my 40's.

Scout class if you want to solo and have good raid utility go swash/brig for scout.

Tank class won't matter much w/ buckler you can solo well on guard/zerker though SK does solo the best imo and if you're starting fresh it's a great way to solo through some of the lowbie zones like WC and get some loot to broker for some income.

Monk/Bruiser while fun are pretty much worthless.

Casters can all solo pretty well.

Crafting sucks and I'd wait till you are 70 to start it.

Necros are easy mode. I had never played one before and magically got one to 65 ;] to try out and I was mowing down even/yellow cons non stop without having a clue how to spec/play the class.

Raids they are mana bitches. Toss out hearts and then their one trick pony lifeburn.

With a few dozen plat you could skip a lot of levels simply buying up collections and turning them in which is not a bad idea to skip crappy level brackets where questing sucks.

I stopped playing back in April. My guild was doing the high end EoF content and I just didn't see the point to constantly raid boring zones like Emerald Halls for upgrades that didn't really make much of a difference anyway. Loot just never seemed cool in this game like it did and still does in EQ1.

Last night I was watching some videos on YouTube and remembered why I was so excited to play EQ2 back in 2004. The combat was much slower paced which allowed you to actually watch the fight and not spam your keys. There was definitely something different about the game back during alpha and beta. In the video below, you can watch them fight and react to the combat, and toss in powerful, necessary spells when needed. Every action just seemed much more important. Ever since release though, after you reach a certain level (around 10) you just start chaining combat abilities every time they refresh. Raids especially come down to how fast you can spam all of your abilities. You're never able to enjoy the particle effects because there are so many going off continuously or you have them turned off all together because of the spam it causes. These 2 videos were of an EQ2 that we never got to play.

For the high quality version of this video go to EverQuest II - Massively Multiplayer Role-Playing Game and watch the In Depth movie on page 3

As a rule, all EoF instances demand a full group if you're at level.
Depends, have no problem clearing OOB with 4 person group (70+ mobs) in a reasonable time and we're not that well geared at all.

I logged onto my brothers account today and noticed armor appearance slot. Isn't this just another form of armor dye that they were trying to avoid?

Alright, I starting playing EQ2. I like it so far. I am a gnome brigand on Najena and only level 8 (I started lastnight). EQ2 has greatly improved from the last time I saw it in November of 2004. I love the 'looking for guild'? interface, thats a top notch touch right there.

I take back my previous comments about the game, its easy to hate on something when you have not played it

Anyway, brigand is hella fun. Some of my veteran rewards are XP potions to assist in leveling. I plan on using them in my 30's when I expect leveling to slow down - or does it?

It shouldn't really, but if I were you, I'd hang on to those XP pots for 50+. I did nothing but quest to get from 1-60. 60-70 added in grouping for xp and loot, but nothing really felt like a grind.

Cool, btw can I just place the potions and that in my house. On a table or on the floor or do I need to bank them? I remember in SWG you could drop whatever you wanted into your house and use it as a bank. Can I do this in EQ2?

Most likely you'll need to bank it. There are plenty of things you can place in your house, but they are usually marked so you can tell.

I'm also enjoying EQ2, working my way slowly through EoF raids zones, no rush

On the point of graphics, if you have a decent card (e.g. 8800) try running on x4 anti-aliasing, wow it looks much better!

Extract from nVidia forum:

EQ2: Add a line to the eq2.ini file in EQ2 directory (or create one if one isn't already there) as follows:

r_aa_blit 1

Save it, then set the AA for EQ2 using the Nvidia control panel, but it doesn't seem to support anything above x4 - it just seems to default to 'no AA' if you try it.

I only have the 7950 nVidia cards, so I'm not willing to sacrifice FPS for extreme graphics. For some reason, my casting speed is affected by my graphics. ;b

Guild ran through Throne of New Tunaria last week and we got up to Mayong on our first run through. The zone is gorgeous, but SoE really outdid themselves when making retarded mobs. There's roughly 100 sentries in that zone that AE stun every 2-5 seconds. If you thought the seedlings in Emerald Halls were bad, you ain't seen nothing yet. To make matters worse, they respawn in about 5 or so minutes!

I no longer hate Plane of Growth (aka Emerald Halls). I DESPISE Throne of New Tunaria. Less fucked up mobs, please, thx!

edit: Yeah, save those XP pots. I was foolish enough to use them in my lower levels (below teens) because no one groups at those levels and soloing as a templar blew hardcore.

What I suggest is to try without AA (just the AF is ok) and instead turn on character, environmental and off-screen shadows (no torch shadows).
The overall effect is a lot better imo, even if the graphic quality is lower. Shadows add so much to this game it's unbelievable. They should really work on making them run through the GPU instead of the CPU, if that's the problem.

yeah, I've done throne of new tunaria. it made me hate my life.

the respawn mechanic is kinda cool and really encourages you to hurry. but FUCK that ae stun. that's the most soul-crushing thing I've ever seen.

The AE stun is a complete bitch, true.

I cant complain because I just got my Crystal Gift earring from the trash last week though. Blew nearly all my DKP on it!
