So Quineloe, what's your Metaworld going to be?

Goodbye stranger, it's been nice. Hope you find your paradise. Tried to see your point of view, hope your dreams will all come true. Goodbye Mary, goodbye Jane, will we ever meet again? Feel no sorrow, feel no shame. Come tomorrow, feel no pain.

We are still in the process of working out those specific details. What I am going to presume at this point is that if you are making stylesheets and assets for other players - you are agreeing to allow them to be used publicly by anyone. Further details on things related to rights, IPs, asset use, etc. will be coming in the future.

I like the idea if it's done right but it's similar to Kaneva which started as more of a game development platform and eventually moved towards social networking 'worlds'. Kaneva. Imagine What You Can Do.

I can see arm chair designers using this as a way to test out creative ideas that should be incorporate into some MMOs already. Wish you luck on the venture.

Erm, it seems a little odd that the basic legal logistics aren't worked out. I mean, I don't have much interest in this, and Koster is an albatross around the neck of any gaming project, but not knowing who owns what as you start out sounds like a really really big problem.

EDIT: For the love of... Web 2.0 is a dumb enough term, let's just avoid the "MMORPG 2.0" bit before it gets started.

Let me go ahead and correct myself here. I'm not familiar with these policies myself, but you can be assured that we have that all figured out -- keep an eye on our blog for our weekly updates for more information on legal issues. To reiterate - we just aren't talking about that yet

Yeah, cause their certainly is no precedent, or several of them in the MMO genre of someone starting up a company or game, and selling it to someone else to go work on something new. Never happened, never will, gotcha !

what? SWG cool at release? huh?
SWG was fantastic at launch, someone with the numbers handy might even be able to confirm that pre-Wow, this was the biggest MMO launch ever. It was a truly open ended, do just about anything sandbox, and people loved it. It was HUGE. Perhaps not for everyone, but it certainly did HAVE something for everyone.

Once Raph was kicked upstairs, the morons took over and now you have a game that is but a shadow of its former greatness. Yeah, I called them morons, because they are. They are underhanded too, liars and pole smoking jerkoffs. All that and more.

I dropped out about the time Raph left (for an unrelated reason) but I am quite sure you can find plenty of people to atest to just how fucking shitty SWG became afterwards.

edit: Just to clarify, I am not some huge Koster fanboy, I just enjoyed SWG when it launched and for several months afterwards. That was his baby, and it rocked. The same way I liked Dave Gorgensen (spelling) aka Smokejumpers Planetside when it launched. Sometimes, when people have a clear vision, and the balls to push it through and launch it, wonderous things can happen. And then, the money men step in.

Obviously this is opinion, but SWG was the worst MMOG I ever played and that includes VG.

It was a truly open ended. Yea because they had no end game, anything without an ending is open ended

do just about anything sandbox. This I agree and enjoyed it was the only reason I played for 3 months

It was HUGE. Yea but it was all computer generated terrain that all meant absolutely nothing. There were no points of interest, no landmarks, no dungeons, nothing whatsoever except stupid nests. Big doesnt mean anything if there is no content in all of that space. It made Vanguard look like wow in regards to making quality content.

My biggest beef is there was literally zero content. it had less content than City Of Heroes. You pulled mission and killed random nests in a boring lifeless world and that was the extent of combat. PVP was pointless and unbalanced badly at the time and ruled by 2 classes. There was nothing to do but gather resources, do tradeskills or hang out in cantinas danicing or playing music. It was the sims online... Even sandbox games need content, UO always had dungeons and points of interest and such.

It seems to be to be a Web 2.0 app for gamers thats jumping on the Google bandwagon, who are have been pretty much pushing the web 2.0 envelope for a while now.

It's ambitious, thats for sure....but I can't say how sucessful it will be. The conceptual promise can be great, but implementation is everything. We shall see.

I did not like SWG. I played FFXI with its horrible interface longer than SWG. I played VG with its bugs and class nerfs much longer than I played SWG. I think I'll leave it at that.

* * *

My internal jury is out on Metaplace. I'll have to see what the web does with it. I have no particular interest in using it to develop my own badger-based MMO. But if someone develops his or her own badger-based MMO I might check it out.

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure how you could say SWG was awesome at launch, the game was a complete disaster. The only thing going for it was the Star Wars name.

As for the Metaplace stuff...what's the over/under on it being 75% porn related within the first 6 months?
