I'm thinking I'll pick up this and Tabula Rasa. Whether I'm in the mood for slaughtering aliens or demons, I'll have my pick. They seem very similar all things considered.

Interesting times ahead. I think the one that manaes to put together a more entertaining PvP/end game scenario will be the ultimate winner.

edit: They just updated that today with more info about in store. Gotta go tomorrow and do the whole e-mail dance so I can get my beta key. Gotta remember to print out a copy first. I'm fucking excited about hellgate.

You could always go to the store and pre-order. It's in-store as well as online.

Can anyone briefly explain to me the class system in hellgate? I just can't comprehend only two classes with no archtypes.

3 base classes, Templar, Cabalist, and Marksman, each with at least 3 "trees" to differentiate them.

From the wiki

Quote:
Within each faction, there are two classes. Cabalists have the Evoker, a frail but powerful direct damage spellcaster, and the Summoner, with few direct attacks but strong minions. Templars have the Guardian, a defensive class that receives bonuses for being surrounded, and the Blademaster, who can wield two swords and trades defense for damaging power. Finally, Hunters have the Marksman, the classic first-person shooter class, and the Engineer

* Blademaster

An offensive melee character, with few defensive skills but packing a lot of damage. Example: Whirlwind causes the character to spin like a top, swords outstretched, damaging everything nearby.

* Guardian

A more defensively oriented melee character, doing less damage but gaining bonuses when surrounded by enemies. Example: Holy Fire Aura adds fire damage to your sword, based on how many enemies are within a given radius around you.

* Evoker

A fragile but powerful long ranged spellcaster that does massive damage, but is vulnerable when cornered. Example: Arc Legion casts multiple streams of lightning from the character's focus device, hitting several enemies or the same enemy multiple times.

* Summoner

A character that fights indirectly, summoning and managing minions to fight for the caster, and using damage over time weapons. Example: Summon Shrieker summons flying demons that attempt to attack and dive-bomb your enemies.

* Marksman

The proverbial first-person shooter character, with many skills to enhance his or her weaponry. Example: Sniper Stance locks the character in place but provides a range bonus and sniper scope.

* Engineer

A minion class similar to the Summoner, with expendable minions as well as combat drones that can wield weapons. Example: Assault Drone summons a hovering bot that can use two-handed rifles.
Basically there are 6 classes to choose from right now, more may be made available to elite accounts.

Characters have a skill tree, but its not like D2/WoW skill trees. Very little dependancy on other skills. My summoner has 23 or so skills. 9 are different pets. (healing pets, nuking pets, tanking pets and I can have a bunch out all at once as long as I have the skills learned) Some pets have 1 or 2 sub skills that branch off of the particular pet skill.

The game engine reminds me of WoW. It can run well and look good on mid/low end systems and at the same time you have the option to boost the graphics up on high end systems. I think that fact will allow it to attract a wide range of players.

Weapons I've seen have 1-4 mod slots on them to insert stuff into. The nice thing is, for a small fee you can pop out the mods and add them to new and better items you find. I love the toxic weapons for the summoner, it is basically like a BFG cloud of doom that AE destroys your target =)

Guild Wars style dismantling on gear/weapons. However you don't need tools to do it. So no annoying trips back and forth to town with all the loot you acquire but don't need. You just break it down instantly on the spot. You can save up those mats to upgrade items.

It is a bit easy at first but you can unlock nightmare mode for more of a challenge.

This was how it originally worked, but there are six classes now - two for each "faction" which is how the old parent classes are being referred to now. They've confirmed they will be adding another three classes post-release (1 per faction) but details are nonexistent. Templars cover everything divine and melee, Cabalist have everything arcane and demonic, and Hunters have everything high-tech and explodey.

I think it's kinda weird that they have two pet classes out of six total, but I think the Engineer isn't as pet-dependent as the Summoner - being a Hunter, they also use guns. I'm guessing.

This is good news that I'm very glad to hear. I was worried that my aging Athlon 64 3200+, GeForce 6800GT would be unable to play this game.

If you're going to pre-order to get the beta and you're doing it in store, be sure to mention it as I doubt they'll bring it up. Corporate doesn't inform them on promotions so yeah. i got my e-mail in though.

So is the beta going now? If I pre-order the game online from Gamestop and they send me a code right away can I start playing right away or what?

Beta starts on the 17th if I recall, and it appears beta-codes will be sent out 3-4 days prior to that.
