I'm a bit out of the loop on this, would you guys care to explain what exactly Absolute Virtue is? Is this the pinnacle of raiding in FFXI right now, or is it just a poorly tuned encounter?

It's the pinnacle of FFXI.

been around for almost 3? years and nobody has defeated it legitly. There were some exploits which could be used to defeat it at one point; but SE patched them up.

SE is very big on making monsters react to certain player actions, etc... More or less if you don't know what you are doing (Nobody does) it's probably comparable to fighting The Sleeper.

SE released that video to gives hints to players. They insist the fight is balanced, etc... But, imagine learning a fight that has certain triggers when there are 0 hints to figuring out those triggers...

Ohh now imagine the fight has a mabey 25~50% chance to spawning off of a triggered boss who takes 12 people 10~15 hours to gather the pop items for!

It's kind of sad, because I remember how awesome it was when I was leading the sea group to finding new sea pops. I was the first to post how to pop the Ix'Aern that pops from the message on the floor, felt so cool. Then months later we were treated with an unbeatable mob that years later is still a giant question mark. Makes me kind of mad, but nothing you can do I guess.

Sleep, along with blind, bind, dispel, and a couple of other things, are a RDM tank's primary hate tools. So he was just spamming it for hate.

It's been awhile since I've played, last I played was when AV was being exploited to be killed. RDM tanks didn't exist back then, makes sense now though.

Other amazing things I've realized is PLD/NIN and NIN/DRK's tanking now too. It's weird to me, but I'm sure to most who play it's normal. Oh well.

The primary thing that's changed is that people have learned a lot about enmity. Provoke may cause a nice hate spike, but it will never accrue into any kind of a "hate lock." If you want to make sure that the monster doesn't get bored with you towards the end of a provoke, you need to be generating as much CE (cumulative enmity) as a pure DD. And to do that, you need hate tools like sleep, blind, and stun. And really, what /NIN can't tank?

That's awesome, I figured as much but never really read anything substantial. That being said, is RDM a good tank then?

Yeah, one of the top 2.

The two tanks my LS uses are PLD & RDM.

RDM/NIN tanks have been around since before anyone was in sea, and long before AV was killed, exploit or not. They were not very highly used, though, largely due to public conception, and playing them required a different mindset than most people were used to.

That being said, I quit for a long period of time, came back, got a bard to 70ish over a month or two, and then got burned out and quit again. I wasn't aware that RDM tanks had even gotten to the point where they were popular.

I'm thinking about coming back and finishing up my Bard, though. The new expansion looks cool, and while I'm not sure I really want Bard to be my main, having one at 75 is a godsend for meriting.

Indeed, you'll never go lonely as a bard.

I knew RDM/NIN's existed, just not as tanks. I was in a top HNMLS on my server and never heard of it, perhaps if I was a RDM I may have though.

Right now I'm levelling my NIN up to be my next 75 job, but I'm also now considering RDM (46). We'll see how it goes.

Probably going to go RDM next. Bought several HQ staves for my bard, along with a v cloak, so that's quite a big chunk of the equipment cost gone already.

I haven't played FFXI since they launched. Think the only gripe I had was the controls and no one to play with. Did they ever fix the control scheme or is a controller still necessary?

Nothing has changed since the game launched. Its still menus or macros fired by ctrl / alt 1-0.

A G15 / 11 keyboard transformed the game play for me, as the 54 memory keys can fire the macros with one key press (plus you can set up the different banks for different jobs if you wish). I would HUGELY recommend anyone who plays this to get one. Never did get on with a controller, although they are much better for high level fishing.

So I finally got my CDs, but since POL's payment system sucks I'm not going to reactivate until March begins.

That said, I want to make sure my old character is still around, so how can I tell my Content ID is deleted within the POL viewer? I got to the point in the Reactivate ID section where I could check my old Content ID and and then get to the point where it was like "It will cost 12.95 to reactivate this ID" with a button saying "Reactivate". I didn't click it since I don't want to waste money.

If you want to use your old character you need to go through the return to vanadiel page on playonline before Feb 29. That's the last day for the program to reinstate old characters.
