And I agree starting out can suck, especially if you're alone. The way its setup really did work at game launch though, mainly because there were so many people killing mobs that you'd have a hard time trying to kill too many since they were all tapped. Also people could help out if they saw you were in trouble. I was friends with a couple people I met in the newbie zones for a long time in that game. Really though, the game doesn't start being fun til around level 15 or so if you ask me. Once you get into the zones where you have to group, and then start your subjob quests and all.

If anything, FFXI is the only MMO I've played where I felt pulled into the story. Between the Missions & Quests and just how NPC reactions change it's neat.

Story Missions, Job System, Group Attacks (Skillchains + MB type shit) are all stuff other games should adopt.

Agreed on the UI complaints and the service complaints. I'm actually worried the UI that SE plans to implement will be worse than the windower. Hopefully they will continue to ignore if people use the windower if that's the case.

They really shouldn't delete chars after any period of time, they would make so much more money. But calling them usually eventually gets you a one time character restore. Kienas has done it as well as many other people I know.

There isn't a reason to cancel POL sub since that's free. Just cancel your FFXI content IDs when you want to cancel.

And ya, starting out sucks. It can be argued game doesn't really start til like 60+. Again causing them to lose more money. You can't get friends caught up easily etc. But I absolutely love playing at the high end always something to do or advance.

Two of my accounts were inactive for 13 months and were fine when I recently reactivated them...

My main account whom I deleted the characters, and the POL account, took me all of 30minutes on the phone to get reinstated and "Undeleted".

With ELV in Germany we have the option of undoing any withdrawal from our account within 6 weeks. Makes it damn nice to cancel accounts when the company gives you a hard time about it =)

I'll be honest, my dealings with NA S-E Customer Support has left me wanting to pull the plug on everyone of those drooling idiots.

Brief background, my original account was NA version which I'd been playing since October 2003. I deleted my characters mid April 2006 and the account expired 30th April. I recently purchased the EU version of the game and made a new guy and started playing him from scratch, a mixture of fun and frustration, true S-E style. Anyway, some friends asked me why I hadn't tried to get my original guy back as the deletion period now lasts up to 12 months. Seemed like a good idea so I began my saga of stupidity with NA CS.

First guy I spoke to was really helpful, he said he could see my characters, my main and my mule, and that they could be restored. However, I needed an active account to do this. Fair enough, I told him I'd go and amend my billing details then call back. This is where I discovered that whilst I could log in on an NA account with my EU POL I couldn't amend billing details. I again rang back up and explained I had an active EU billing account and was it possible to use this with the NA characters. No go, basically I had to get NA POL to change the billing details and set up a payment method on the NA account. So, I eventually tracked down a set of NA POL disks and then log in and activate my NA account. I then go back on the phone to S-E CS and explain the account is activated and the content ID the main was on is also active and empty. Three weeks pass and I receive four seperate replies to four subsequent character restoration requests each telling me it is not possible to retrieve the character. So, after about $80 in international phone calls, a paid NA account for one month, dozens of account questions detailing my character's jobs, levels, etc. S-E finally turn round and tell me the fucknut who originally told me the character was there and could be restored had given me incorrect information and they apologised for any incovenience I may have encountered. "Is there anything else we can help you with today?"

At around that point a vein burst in the side of my head.

FFXI reserves the right to do deletion after three months, although clearly they don't always choose to do so. Mine were deleted, though, after about 9 months (though it could've been sooner as I wasn't checking). So yeah...warning there. My EQ account, which is...like a decade old is still kicking, but FFXI refuses to offer me the same service. Neat.

And also, unrelated, the combat is so slow paced you can make yourself a sandwich and eat it and come back and you've swung about five times. I don't know why the crap I came back to that game.

Great MMO while it was fun. The problems started when gilsellers got passed Delkfutt's Tower and into our endgame lives. Poor resolution on SE's part too. I played this game for 3 years, everything they ever implemented felt like too little too late. It was a shame because I've made some amazing friends in the game that I still talk to, to this day. That's the only thing about WoW and some other games, the community is constantly moving and changing.

Jesus fuck that video's made it's rounds. That guy was a good friend of mine in FFXI on Titan until he got banned a year and a half ago for exploiting (Everyone did it... some just stopped at a better time then others ;d). We used to XP pretty often in a rather fucked up setup because his and another friend of ours DPS were so absurd that they just said fuck holding back (They were best geared Dark Knight & Monk on the server). PLD/WHM, RDM/WHM, BLM/WHM, BRD/WHM, DRK/WAR, MNK/WAR(him) groups for the fucking win.

That weapon he's using is the most overpowered in the game. In the hands of a Dark Knight you can literately rip 10-20% off most boss, hnm whatever monsters in a matter of 30-60 seconds. Stack that a few times and you have a dead monster pretty fast. I remember when that Video was taken... it was originally posted on some internal linkshell forums and it shortly spread like a wildfire....

Gill sellers haven't been much of an issue for me since I left Titan and moved to Hades. I see them every once and a while but they arn't a serious issue at least on this server. Titan on the otherhand, Ye gawds if you wanted to touch anything in Sky.

Been playing FFXi again as well for a while (since wow pretty much died off for me), my content id's were cancelled for a good 6 months but nothing was deleted at all.

For me personally I find the game superior to wow in many ways. Sure it can't compare graphic wise or ui wise, but the grouping, the job system (includes sharing your reputation/access/skills over all your jobs), the awesome story / missions, servers having an actual community of some sorts, the general immersion/travelling/no retard chatrooms, the linkshell system (Graned has it's cons as well), hell even the 'ballista', are in my opinion deffinate plusses.
Also the UI will grow onto you, especially if you're a keyboard person (and do a few customizations ). It's pretty much second nature now.

I only wish it had some more Europeans playing, but I reckon at this time the game isn't too appealing to start anew in nowadays, but for me it is currently the ideal game.

After two years of playing that's the reason I finally quit. That game would really benefit from region specific servers.

They still haven't learned their lesson on this. Their next MMO is planned to have worldwide servers for everyone, just like FFXI.
