Fallout MMO coming

I don't recall seeing any Fallout related threads other then wishful thinking. Some of us might have heard about the Fallout license aquirement by Bathesda.

Interplay will start raising the capitol it needs to fund Fallout MMO development. Their projected timetable calls for a 2010 release.

Interplay Ready for "Fallout Online" : Next Generation - Interactive Entertainment Today, Video Game and Industry News

Quote:
Interplay has posted an exponential rise in revenues on the sale of the Fallout IP to Bethesda. Now the firm says it's ready to secure funding for "Fallout Online."

Interplay CEO Herve Caen said in a statement, "I am pleased with the progress the company has made, particularly with our debt load, which has improved from $59 million in December 2001 to less than $3 million today.

"With that difficult period behind us, we are focused on securing funding for development of a Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG) based on the popular Fallout franchise. Along with our strategy of leveraging our existing portfolio of intellectual gaming properties, Fallout Online will play a key role in the future of Interplay."

Net income for the quarter ended June 30 was $5.46 million, up from net income of $2.6 million for the comparable quarter a year ago.

Revenues for the three months were $5.8 million up 2,431 percent year-on-year, thanks to the sale of the Fallout IP. Six-month revenues were $5.9 million, up 1,708 percent.

Interplay sold off the rights to the revered RPG franchise Fallout earlier this year for $5.75 million to Bethesda, developer of Oblivion and Fallout 3. Interplay then obtained the exclusive license for the online Fallout game.

Interplay published Black Isle Studio's Fallout for PC in 1997.
a Trademark License Agreement between Bethesda and Interplay is up, in regards to what Interplay is expected to provide. If Interplay fails to meet them, Bethesda will yank the IP from them. I didn't read through it all.

I'm extremely wary of Interplay developing this inhouse.

I have this mental image in my mind's eye of the Fallout license as a pristine, radiant projection of the female form, coalesced in part and in whole of ensorcelling beauty, and of Interplay as the drunket frat fuck in his fraternity's closet blindly groping with untrained hands as the rape commences.

It's not pretty.

Depends on who they get to head the project up. BTW, this isn't necessarily news except for them saying that they're persuing funding. Back when it was announced that Bethesda was getting the rights to make a Fallout game, special mention was made in almost every article I read that stated Interplay maintained the exclusive rights to create an MMO of the property.

Why wouldn't Bethesda take care of a project as delicate as an MMO by themselves?

I'm sure they would, or possibly will eventually, but when the Fallout license was up for grabs, Interplay made sure to include a caveat which allowed them to keep the rights for that purpose only. Besides, given Bethesda's track record with single player games, we're better off... for now.

Betheseda rely on the mod community to actually balance their games properly. The last thing I want to see them doing is a MMORPG.

What the fuck is that there supposed to mean? Exponential huh? Oh neat.

Anyhow, call me in '09 and we can bash what the fuckers end up doing to a solid game franchise that doesn't in any way translate into a solid MMO setting.

I've always thought Bethesda's worldbuilding was very good, but their mechanics in most games sucked. If they'd just take care of making the world and let a company like interplay deal with the actual, you know, gameplay, then that would be a perfect fit.

I don't know why you would say Fallout doesn't translate into an MMO. I think it's a damn good fit actually and would be more interesting than yet-another-high-fantasy game if done well. Doing it well, however, is a different matter entirely.

As bad as the idea of Interplay doing the MMO is, it's infinitely preferable to Bethesda having anything at all to do with it.

Bethesda has the balls on this project thats for sure.

3.0 OWNERSHIP.

3.1 SOLE OWNER. Interplay acknowledges and agrees that, as
between the parties, Bethesda is the sole and exclusive owner of the Licensed
Marks. Bethesda may, in its sole discretion, maintain or discontinue the
maintenance of any applications and registrations for the Marks or seek
registration for any Licensed Mark at any time.

Try playing a non-GOTY edition of Morrowind to find out exactly why Bethesda shouldn't make an mmorpg in house.

Holy shit that's not enough time. They don't even have capital, let alone staff, let alone design docs, let alone a single asset they could use. Try 2012, Interplay.
