The problem with Star Trek is that the series already felt like a MMO. Every expansion, oops I mean spin-off, felt like the stuff released previously with a new class thrown in (Changeling!) or race.. hell, even the gameplay mechancis were there, Sisko spent his time farming Dominion at the wormhole's opening, that bastard.

And let's not forget that every away team mission felt like the holy MMO trinity in live action.. tank (Worf/O'Brien/Kirk/whatever), healer (Bashir/Crusher/Bones/whatever), crowd control (Spock/Troy/Dax/whatever)...

I highly doubt Blizzard would even take a sniff at Star Trek. Starcraft would be much more successful for them, just for the fact they already have a huge installed player base that would gobble it up. And the fact that they would have the freedom to make Starcraft however they wanted, while for Star Trek they would have to go back and forth with Paramount on what they can or cannot do, and follow Canon to a tee even if they placed the content 20 years into the future like Perpetual was planning to do.

They wouldn't be able to make the game they want to make, I'm sure Paramount didn't interfere with Perpetual as LucasArts did with SOE and SWG, but they sure as heck couldn't put in a lot of the funny stuff they have their games, like the funny references have littered in WoW. Besides if they did do a Trek game instead of Starcraft, their fans would probably turn on them lol.

A countdown has been put up on the Champions Online and Cryptic websites that is widely rumored to be a countdown to the unveiling of a resurrected Star Trek Online being developed by Cryptic Studios. From the STO wiki page:

Quote:
On March 15, 2008, the official Star Trek Online website posted a notice of 'coming soon', implying that the domain had been transferred to a new company and the game was once again under development. On 13 March, Star Trek news site TrekMovie.com reported having confirmed with "sources" that the new developer is Cryptic Studios, as had been the rumor for several weeks.[19] Cryptic Studios' website was updated in June 2008 with a clock counting down to July 27, 2008, with a piece of Perpetual's ST:O concept art as the background, although the significance of the date remains unknown.

Well Teclisen called that a while back. I never did try CoH/CoV, so I have no clue what to expect.

Jait straightens his shirt, puts his hands on his hips, and stares out the viewport to the stars.
Jait says: What planet is that Mister Spock? Get out your tricorder.

Lt Steele has been kicked from the guild! (United Federation of Planets)

I'd just like to point out much internets I want to give Jait for this, but can't. It's a bunch, btw.

If it isnt already blindingly obvious, Cryptic "bought" Star Trek from Perpetual shortly before they shut down. It was a more complex licensing deal behind the doors, and they still had to appease the masters at CBS who own the IP. Perpetual got a few bucks, but they were bleeding cash so fast that it was just a drop in the bucket. Cryptic acquired a license to the technology as well as the concept art and pre-production design documentation. All (or most) of the members of the Perpetual STO team were given interviews with Cryptic, but I dont think very many if any at all went to Cryptic.

I beleive that Cryptic will probably take some of the art but I doubt they will use the Perpetual client or server technology. The client was perhaps the most promising of the two, but Cryptic seems to be doing OK with their own tech from what they have shown of their other MMO. The Perpetual server tech was far from proven tech, its inability to scale is pretty much what got G&H canceled.

i still think if done right a star trek MMO would be killer. if you could captain your own ship, create that ship and have a huge area to explore, it would probably be a shit ton of fun. of course i really hope if they make this game that you can play as any of the races in the series and not just as the federation. i'd rather play as a captain of a romulan bird of prey or as a klingon. here's hoping.

One thing I hope Cryptic keeps is the advancement of the timeline that Perpetual had planned. It would avoid the trap that SWG fell into with not only being stuck in a period that people know a lot about from the various shows and movies, but also from being constrained by the events that took place and not feeling like what you did could matter on a larger scale.

Star Trek Online should be the greatest SciFi MMO ever created, but you know it'll be one of the ones that ranks high on the "Epic Fail" list for MMO's.

I really hope I'm proven wrong.

It would also be nice if every single new piece of shit MMO did not get hyped as THE next wow-crippler if not wow-killer.

i could care less if a game has the subs or success of WoW. i'd just like to find a game that i could really enjoy playing. i think a star trek MMO would be fun as hell if done correctly.

Cryptic formally announced Star Trek Online today with a new site and screenshots etc.

Sounds like they are making use of much of what was done before? That's at least the impression I got from a cursory overview of the site. In a couple weeks they will be debuting gameplay videos at a Star Trek convention (and online as well)
