| Since this merit of this threads existence is dubious at best someone wanna detail the state of CoH right now? How easy is it to get started up again? Are healers/CC actually needed and highly desired like other MMOs? Do you still have fire tank classes which can solo 12 purples at a time? Way WoW content is looking i'm going to have some spare time in a few months.

+2 Internets | I'm kinda curious to the 'state of the game' as well. I quit around 8 months after release. I have a lot of respect for Cryptic and what they were trying to accomplish but the lack of depth to the game got to me after awhile. I only played a blaster to 33'ish and a SR BS scrapper to 20'ish. I left around the time those alien characters started popping up that you unlocked at 50. |

| i resubbed for a month just for some random casual fun. The game is ALOT better balanced than it has ever been. Groups usually have 1-2 of each class so it's not 1 fire tanker and 5 blasters anymore. You can use the new police scanner (in agents tab) for an instant mission in whichever zone you are in so you don't have to spend 50% of your time traveling across zones. The new crafting system is gimmicky and gives something for 50's to do i guess, most people just seem to cash out the parts though. All in all it was enjoyable as a casual pastime a couple hours a week if you liked the premise of the game. They took out the 5th column in an RP event and renamed them The Council right before the European release though, so no more killing Nazi's =/ |

| What the fuck did the burn tanker need with 5 blasters? Even after a series of nerfs I was still nearly unstoppable.

+4 Internets | On the CoV side... If you have a crew to roll with, a Brute is pretty awesome in PVP in my opinion When I tried running around myself it was a bit tough unless I was stocked up on heal and endurance potions.. Or.. whatever you they call them ![]() The Mastermind was really solid in PVP and PVE too, but I think that is pretty obvious given the classes' structure ![]()

+2 Internets | Man, I heard they removed the 5th from the game and I lost a bit of respect for them after doing that. I don't normally like to swear in a post but fuck that bullshit right in the ass. No Nazi's to beat up? What's next? Villians aren't bad, just morally challenged? Damn political correctness bullshit. P.S. And yes, I've heard various stories about laws in Germany regarding the portrayal of the Nazi party/emblems in video games. But half of what I've read was 'no, can't show it' and other half was 'yes, they can but...' so unless you have linkage to legal code gtfo. |

| We bawlin boi! | For heros: Eh, for hero side, 2 archs/builds that are notorious for kicking butt are a fire/energy blaster and a rad/psi defender (more for arena domination). PvP is massively unbalanced in favor of the good(blue) side, due to the power pools at 41+ for the heros being incredibly overpowered (blasters can get access to the equivalent of a tanks tier 9 godmode power with Force of Nature). Villains equivalent patron power pools (ppp's as people refer to them) are complete garbage comparatively, and are just basically for thematic or roleplay reasons, giving the heros a bigtime advantage in zones like Recluses Victory(RV). For pure sexiness though, nothing tops Ghost Widows hold you can unlock! Controllers illusion/* are known to be good at pvp (with a self invis, confuse ability), well, controllers of basically anything are great, /rad if you like to solo, /empath if you want to make the entire villain zone cry when you enter it with all your huge buffs (clear mind, fortitude, adrenalin boost turns a scrapper into a god). Other good pvp toons blueside are ice/energy or ice/ice tanks (-recharge is really brutal in pvp), ice/ blasters, also spines/regen fotm scrappers are nasty with their ranged attack impale. For Villains: Masterminds can be *ok* at pvp redside, if you either take a secondary with status protection like /traps or /force fields, or if you team with someone who can give you protection against status effects. The /poison set can absolutely obliterate people (especially /regens which are the most common for scraps/stalkers) with its massive single target debuffs. Envenom and weaken are pound for pound the 2 most devastating single target debuffs in CoX. Im actually leveling a ninja/poison MM atm just for pvp, just keep in mind teleport foe will make you cry as you lose bodyguard when you are not in range of your pets. It's cheesy as hell, sure, but it can wreck most MM builds. Stalkers like energy/ninjitsu or energy/regen are also very good pvp gankers for redside, really the one class that can rack up kills solo due to build up-->assassin strike-->energy transfer-->total focus will pretty much destroy anyone. For stalkers in pvp, there is energy and then there is everything else, unfortunately (massive burst + energy isn't usually resisted by most= the nuts in pvp). For brutes, super strength is a very good pvp offense set due to Rage giving +hit, which will offset alot of super reflexes/defense based sets, and /electricity armor is just insane, as it gives protection to slows in pvp, endurance drain, and protection against the cheesiest pvp tool out there, teleport foe. A big problem with brutes which has persisted for a long time is, they dont build rage in pvp like they are supposed to--->the formula is borked and the devs can't seem to fix it which really hurts them. Also, energy melee for brutes is the same for stalkers/tankers in its massive burst, and sets like dark melee and electricity aren't so good due to either being more utiilty based or aoe based which isn't as good for pvp. Corrupters, ice/cold is a very brutal pvp set (almost rivaling masterminds /poison for debuff nastiness via infrigidate, sleet, benumb, snow storm etc), and /sonics or /thermals are never unwelcome from a team standpoint as they provide status protection and very nice buffs (ice/rad is also a very good corr pvp build also). Dominators are pretty gimp outside of some gimmicky tricks with things like telekinesis, but can do well on teams with support from classes like corrupters since they're so squishy. Hero side just has many, many more players, the new inventions are much easier to get there, pvp is easier, pve is easier...blueside is just easymode compared to villains for the most part (especially for pvp). Pvp would be easier with a friend however if you decide to go villainside, just remember that the redside promotes the solo mindset much more than the blue, so people in general tend to play like the archetypical comic roles, ("me first, what's a team again??") and blue-side most players (except dirty scrappers) play team oriented first, which is another reason they tend to dominate. Once you decide what you want to play, I can offer help or advice on builds (played since beta off and on). Finding duos is easy, there are lots of powerful ones. If your friend really wants to play a blaster, I'd suggest complementing with either a controller or defender (controller is better imo) to give buffs and heals to the very squishy blasters. A mind/empathy controller could imo, bring a disgusting amount of power to a blaster duo (in pvp as well as pve) due to the massive contol, lack of sleep protection from most all non melee classes (mesmerize is just pure awesome for shutting things/players down and it cuts through force field protection), and the best pvp buffs and heals in the game via the empathy set. Keep in mind with that combo, its insanely powerful on teams but your ability to solo as a mind/empathy will be like cutting steak with a plastic fork compared to something like a fire/ controller in the post 32 pet game (since mind gets no pet, just mass confuse). That said, all in all the game is still fun for me as its a more casual environment, and the new coop hero/villain zone in I10 should be a blast so it would be a good time to start. I was hoping for something like this in WoW forever, as the world is basically turning into Independence Day (massive rikti spaceship invasion of earth) where Lord Recluse and Statesman work together to repel the alien threat. There will be a new strike force which can be co-oped which should be a lot of fun, and make for a lot of insane combos (my brute will bust a nut with a team chock-full of defender support for massive SMASH). Anyways, thats a pretty simplistic view overall, but I hope that helped you somewhat in that long rambling. I included the info for both sides in case anyone else was curious, as CoH isn't often discussed here. And yes, 5th column > council. Last edited by Genjiro : 07-02-2007 at 02:58 AM. |

| I had thought I had read that this wasn't true. That it was only a net rumor. at any rate CoH never used nazi emblems. the 5th columns emblem was a skull with a V behind it. I could be wrong but i don't remember anyone saying in game that they were nazi's specifically, only that they were super powered germans that invaded paragon city during WW2...that also happened to be pretty racist. |

I remember playing Wolfenstein 3D at 12-13 years old in 1992 or thereabouts (which was full of swastikas and nazi imagery.) I remember my parents asking me what kind of game I was playing. After I explained to them I was KILLING the nazis, and not playing some kind of game where you side with them, everything was cool. They never really hassled me about anything, though. I think I was playing through Leisure Suit Larry when I was like 9-10 years old. | |

| While I havent played CoH on the max lvl Im finding at the high 30's an assault/devices blaster to being very tough in pvp. Calltrops/trip mine and teleport foe is amazing quick kill. Add in fact targeting drone stands good chance to see though cloacked stalkers. OH and if you really just want to make it brutal throw down the turrent as little extra punch in your trap. |
