I would hazard in the mad dash, and with the staff they had, they just didn't have a guy into this kind of work, and SOE does.

I do want to be clear though that I have no problem being wrong. If WoW's retention ends up matching EQ's, that's great. It doesn't hurt me, Sigil, Vanguard, or anybody.

Nor would it invalidate what we think makes a game sticky and have great retention. It would prove that there are other ways to have great retention in addition to how we approach MMOG game design.

What will validate or invalidate our ideology will be the success or lack thereof of Vanguard. Some people assert that a game that builds on what perhaps made EQ so successful and have such great retention will fail now because people have changed, or because it was never really good game design and that its success was merely because there were not other choices at the time. We obviously disagree. Time will tell. I think a lot of EQ players will love Vanguard and play it a long time. I also think that a lot of newer MMOG players, people for whom WoW or one of the newer MMOGs was their first such experience, will find that Vanguard provides them an experience they want. This combination of old school EQ players and new players seeking more depth and challenge is, in our opinion, a very viable target audience for an MMOG.

I don't dislike WoW. On a personal level it's not for me, but that's fine. Profressionaly I respect it hugely. Blizzard set out with a strong vision and they realized it for the most part and have created a huge success. Because their vision and target audience is different than Vanguard's is simply a difference -- it's not a statement or a proof that one vision or ideology or philosophy is superior. That they've grown the MMOG gamespace to such an extent is not only great for them, but I think fantastic for the genre as a whole. I think we MMOG developers can learn a lot from WoW -- we'd be fools not study it and try to figure out why it has been so successful. That doesn't mean we should necessarily try to make a better WoW, though.

What's ironic is that VG's release didn't even get a chance to validate his thoughts or not because the product was too much of a technical disaster to allow the question to be posed, as it were.

My Wily Warlock Robe (Or Emp Robe) would like to disagree with you. Same goes for any Mischief chest piece. Crazy Cleric was, well Crazy looking.

What instance of ToV would you use to get to Mischief? It was easier to make the run when the named were down.

Before dyes it was quite obvious who had what for chest pieces and other items.

I am using the velious era because it was mentioned, and before dyes.

Yes they had similar patterns, that issue is not in contention. You knew it was different based upon the color not one of the 4 patterns.

Didn't want to make a new thread, and couldn't find an appropriate WAR thread, but apparently EA-Mythic hired some of the old VG people.

This line said a lot though heh.

If you're lazy heres the full two paragraphs:

Quote:
We also picked up a few ex-vanguard people here at EA-Mythic central, they are all good people, they have to be to get passed our recruiter bulldog and the interviews we have here. We are marching to glory, Mark demands nothing less and 'The Hickman' ™ stands guard watching everything (and playing with his pirate pinkie ring), so, we are marching to glory and every body on the team needs to jump in feet first and give their all. At first they looked a little like deer in head lights. It can be quite daunting entering our place and seeing people smile, laugh, be joyous and basically loving their jobs. But we have a great team of people and we are making them feel at home.

They are being immersed in the whole Warhammer-ness of our project and the way we do things around here. I told them to wear their sigil t-shirts with pride. They worked hard, they tried, I know that this time it didn't work out but that's not reason to hide what you have been doing with your life. To use a phrase from GW HQ. "The Emperor will not judge you by your medals, he will judge you by your scars."

Turns out they have been watching the video blogs and pod casts as well, who knew!

Re-reading that Brad quote above amused me. Man was he so out of touch with the market. Glad some of the fired folks are getting jobs tho. Here's hoping they produce a good product (and one I am keeping my eye on).

go the official forum index, the trackers are right under the Vanguard logo in very small text.

I'm interviewing David Gilbertson next week on Uberguilds Radio. Once I get the interview time set in stone I'll announce when we're going to air it. Most likely we'll air it on Wednesday night/evening and then again on the weekend with a download option.
