To elaborate a little, assassins are basiclly wow rogues without the stuns, so yeah soloing is pretty lol. Ton of dps though.

Don't think the dps difference makes up for the lack of fun factor compared to swashbucklers/brigands though.

There are more assassins than swashbucklers/brigands, btw. It's true that a well equipped assassin can replace a guardian/berserker, but there's a lot more of them (and rangers) around.

Is the graphics engine for this game especially CPU intensive? I'm using an older overclocked 4200+ dual core with an 8800GT 512 and I'm having trouble arriving at a good performance/quality balance. I tried the settings posted a few pages back, and they helped, but I'm still not impressed with how things are running.

Is it just a clunky engine? I was in the LoTR beta using the high res textures, and that game looked a ton better and ran far more smoothly on an older video card.

I have an older computer than you (I believe) and I could pretty much run EQ2 on High settings with relatively no lag. Surprised that you're having issues, tho.

I believe there were some posts about particular performance issues with that graphics card on the official forums, and other stuff about high end machines having problems. It sounds like something they've been trying to fix for a while.

I'd guess your being bottlenecked by your cpu. Do you have 2+gigs of ram also? I have the same card, c2duo and I'm constantly at 40+ fps even with shadows on. Few tricks here and there, but for the most part the graphics dont get much better.

Just to rehash in case you missed some options:

Turn smoothfont off.

On maps with water, change one of the settings (i forget which) so that I think its a cube map, and not drawn on the fly. Mess around with it till your fps jump up.

Turn down flora to about half.

Limit the number of windows on your screen, or make them transparent if you can.

If you want shadows, just use character shadows, and set the detail to medium. Looks 10x better.

If I think of more I'll post em. =)

Not at all. The raiding scene is...the raiding scene. But in terms of leveling and sheer number of dungeons and areas, I've enjoyed EQ2 waaay more than WoW. The DoF areas kick ass, I love the AA trees, and there is like 1,000,000 times less bitching about balance. Now if only 1-19 chat could go a day without talking about WoW and the MMO market...

Theres alot of classes who just aren't welcome on raids. Why take a Brawler class when you can't take another higher DPS class. Its been this way for over a year and I don't know why they don't fix it. I wouldn't say there is a "ton" less bitching about balance. I've tried to get back into EQ2 for the third time and its just not "that" compelling.

The AA trees have been much kinder to some classes than others.

The reason there is not so much bitching about balance is because of the ability to change class. If this wasn't possible there would be a metric shitload of Berserkers permanently camped outside SoE HQ.

Plus any vaguely negative posts on the official forums are deleted and the posters banned.

There are some tips that help, as Zuuljin said, but YES the engine is extremely clunky. The engine is only single core optimized and seems to be very CPU bound. Shadow engine that most people disable has been shown to run off of the CPU as well, which puts even more of a strain on things.

I'd give my right arm if SOE went and revamped the engine and at a bare minimum went and made the engine run on multiple cores. It is all too common for my overclocked 4GHz quad core to have 1 core pegged to 100% with EQ2 while the other 3 cores are virtually sitting idle. Such a huge waste of resources.

Monks and bruisers are pretty useless. Paladins and shadowknights aren't that great either. All 4 suffer the same problem, outright tank worse then guardians and no dps either.

yup they really need to do something about the engine. it really is pretty poor for the actual hardware advances since it was made as opposed to the supposed one they made it to run on.
