Look at these numbers. Club Penguin has over 4 million users. Webkinz has almost 4 million. These are virtual world type games that are free to sign up that offer paid memberships. They're also geared towards young girls.

This is practically a sure success for SOE from a business standpoint. MMORPG's are not where the money is at, comparatively speaking. The money is in virtual spaces, with low ease of entry and tiered pricing. The money is in these 'games' that most of us have no interest in. Browser based, geared towards children or teenagers, social environments that present a fun place for kids to talk to each other and to create/customize their worlds and share with friends.

Bottom line. Its a smart move for SOE - and I'd guess it will be far more successful than any MMO they've put out yet. I don't think that's a bad thing either...I think its something SOE would be foolish not to put some resources towards when its clearly where a lot of revenue lies.
Not intened to be offensive, but this is probably your best post ever imo.

I wish people would stop repeating this mantra. EQ at it's PEAK hit 450kish. That is it. No retread will ever reach more than that, and at best VG, which tried to, didn't even reach half. Move on, reminiscing about EQ is no different than doing the same about horse buggies.

I think that smed and SOE are taking a risk that they can't yet realize, because they are halfway normal people, but I do expect a lot of griefing and stuff like that with this "easy access" nonsense =)

On the other hand its a brilliant idea. I own two toy stores in my town myself and I have been working in the toy business for over 15 years now and the idea is imho foolproof.
Make anything pink or with horses used or wanted by little girls and you can become rich. That rule has worked for the last 5 years straight when the color pink came back to the market and I am very sure that this will go on for at least a couple of years.

Brilliant move SOE... i can't wait to read about the scandals this will produce=P

This is exactly the answer why he does. It is really brilliant. He is selling a product to an audience that almost completly lacks the ability to be criticising something constructivly and that has good access to mommies or daddies purse.

People spend way more money for their children and their leisure activities then for themselves. On top of that parents these days tend to try to "keep their kids busy" so they don't annoy their parents and computergames are brilliant for that. (not that its a good idea to do so , but it is sadly common practise)

All the MMO's I have played I have never bought myself any gear or money for in game. However I have 2 daughters oldest being 8, and I guarantee my credit card will see some charges from this game.

Quick note.... I hate ponies and pink. I better have a son soon.

EDIT: Found an article on their site about about people abusing the church service.

rofl. I havent played EQ in years. I promise I don't miss it and that wasn't the intent of what I said, I just used EQ as a default, I could have used WoW also. I meant just a generic fantasy setting cookie cutter MMO. Everyone is going to spread their wings and take virt worlds to smaller and smaller niches, then in 5 or 6 years someone will come out with a generic fantasy setting and everyone will be like "hey eq/wow/daoc/uo was a blast I want to go back to something like that."

You can't really say that. The market has changed dramatically. Who knows, a more rough around the edges MMO might fly better nowadays, or might fly worse. Since no one has done it, you can't say.

I think its reasonable to say that things aren't going to go backwards, just like people don't go back on other things in society or technology. The days of anything but minor death penalties are completely, stick a fork in 'em dead, for example. It's not coming back, because its a one-way street.

Could a "hard core" game exist? Yes, however, in a world of multi-million account MMO's it won't *matter* to the MMO scene.

Insofar as mattering to the market, that ship has sailed.
