I lol'ed when I read "This particular MMO is aimed at 10-year old girls who like horses". However the rest about RMT, premium paid content and in-game advertising is making me want to puke.

I think you're right. Next-gen are quick, easy, WoW-like, 1-2 year life cycle MMOs that are free but ad-supported, paid premium features. No place for us old school EQers who liked 6 years cycle games where earning stuff meant something.

In certain games like AO the ads were a given. There were billboards all over the fucking place that were screaming "Place ad here" and it would never break immersion. In fact ads made it more immersive. But in fantasy mmorpgs?Where would you place ads where they would not detract from the game world? Boots made by Nikey? Wursthoff Trient swords? Coca Cola potion of healing?

That's because we're mental deviants. No, seriously, people who think like that are mental deviants, not a mainstream market. They weren't even a mainstream market in the EQ days, people just made the mistake of thinking they were because EQ was successful, largely for other reasons.

I don't think so. There's a bunch of people still playing Counterstrike daily now, even tho its several years old, and many newer more modern shooters keep coming out. It's the same thing with people playing hardcore any old game. We just do it for MMOs. We're not 13 anymore, but it's no surprise companies are changing the way they are making games to aim at the younger generation, instead of following us as we age. It doesn't make us weird for not wanting to adopt their new models.

How is that WoW-like?

Yep. Though I will say Vanguard could have done quite well if it was managed properly and shipped polished and finished.

MMOs are now cyclical. For the next 5 years or so everything that will come out will be RMT/hyperdemographicly targeted niche MMOs till someone comes out with an EQ clone in 2013 (what we all bitch about now) and everyone falls in love with it because it feels "old school". SOE just happens to have one of each (ie they know/knew the divide is/was coming).
