[UO] Kingdom Reborn Beta

The Kingdom Reborn beta has opened up for Ultima Online. This is the expansion that is completly revamping the graphics and doing alot of game play upgrades. If you're interested you can grab the file/key from Fileplanet.

Patching now to see how different it is.

I played UO back in the glory days (launch to rep/murderer system) and loved it. Going to try this out to see what it's like.

I played UO from launch till EQ came out and then I tried to play again several expansions ago but it wasnt really any fun. Seeing everyone riding around on pink bugs and having 13 silver and gold dragons following them around pretty much killed any nostalgia I had left.

Tram/Fel are no longer really important imo. With the insurance system people arnt afraid to go into Fel if they want too. They will go do Champion Spawns, dungeon crawls whatever. You'll also find that alot more people dont recall or run when you attack them.

The combat system they use now (I dont know if its changing in KR) takes skill to master. The days of bringing Power-Vanq weapons and owning shit are long gone. No more 1-2 shot kills followed by loads of trash talk. If you dont have a real knowledge of the system, a good suit of armor tailored to your build and the ability to think on the run (literally) you will get fucked up. The system is not friendly to mediocore players. I have seen countless times people show up at Yew/Britain moongates and get fucking schooled over and over again. Its not WoW that is for sure... if you want the rewards of pvp you have to accually be good at it and not just have alot of free time.

Anyway, long story short. If the only reason you guys may of quit UO is because of carebear Trammal you might want to consider taking another look. Sure you still get people who would rather hang out in tram all day but those are normally the house wives who use UO like a graphical chat room and sit at the bank all day bullshitting. If you want UO pvp.. its waiting.

To think someone even thinks that pvp in UO today is the same back then.

Tactics are different and you talk about insurance like its a good idea, no, it goes against everything that UO was about when it was created.

Trammel... Macro up to 7xgm farm a house THEN go pvp?
Sounds like WoW.

Fucking casuals.

Amen to the glory days of UO PvP. One thing that UO got right that I've yet to find in any other game: you never knew what was going to happen when you left the city.

I've played other PvP games since then, but UO still had the "fear of the unknown" going for it; you could either come back to the city thousands of gold richer, or come back completely naked having been ganked by some random PKer.

While it was frustrating at times, the amount of freedom in pre-Trammel UO was amazing. Nothing beat being a rogue who was actually a rogue: snooping in backpacks and stealing from players in the cities was the best. Granted the "Bank Guards Sell" macroes pretty much ruined it, but it was fun while it lasted.

It sucks we'll probably never see a game with as much freedom as early UO allowed. Could you even imagine a fantasy MMO made by EA/Blizzard/Sony that had a feature like robbing someone's house?? Every one of those companies would fire the designer suggesting such a thing instantly.

Thats because it wouldn't sell to a majority of players.

Wow another wonedrfull trip down selective memory lane concerning UO? This reminds me of EQ nostalgia threads.

BTW there was a reason the origonal UO was changed and there is a reason no other game has allowed such freedoms. Because that type of predatory gameplay is great for a few but sucks for the majority.

Now back to your regularly scheduled stroll down memory lane...

yeah, because UO was nothing but a gankfest right? as soon as you stepped out of any town you were instantly pk'ed right? because the wolves were just praying on sheep all the time right? fucking retard.

i swear to you. you make an open ended world, almost same mechanics, but with great graphics people would be flocking. i guaranfuckingtee it.

The reason it was changed was because they listened to the 10% that whined on the forums. UO at it's worst was still relatively safe, you got ganked a lot less than you do on your average WoW PvP server. It's just that you lost all your stuff, but most people's stuff was completely worthless anyway so that didn't matter either.

Exactly. Make a skill based game where skill was 90% of your power as opposed to gear (like early UO was) and you could recoup from your losses from dying and having your stuff looted.

Has anyone gotten this to work, btw? Every time I try to use the key it asks me to subscribe to UO. Fileplanet says 14 days free, though. And I mean it's not even just a matter of entering credit card info, they actually want you me to pay... so... not sure what I'm doing wrong.
