It was aired on GameplayHD. I competed for one of the euro teams there.

I have to admit the whole jumping issue put me off to begin with. Having said that the movement overall is on a totally different level for PVP to most other MMOs; collision detection, dodging of projectiles and the positional play really give it an edge over the rest.

This isn't meant to be a which-mmo-is-the-bestest-thread. I was more interested in hearing what people think of the video, and if people who aren't familiar with GW can actually get a general idea of what is going on.

I don't play gw and could figure out what's going on just fine.

That said, the cameras bounce around too much. It would be nice if when they focused on some part of the match, it stayed on it. Half the time you're watching random fans or people staring into monitors, the other half I'm struggling to figure out what's happening, and it often switches just as I get my bearings. If I knew the maps it may work better, but I don't, and I doubt most viewers know the maps that well.

Thanks. I figured it had to be more keystroke controlled than point-and-click those players were using. I'm a half-and-half person myself.

there's other simplifactions too that are unapparent. like when you spacebar to auto attack. you keep attacking target A. you could then target some other juicy target (while still attacking the first target. the space bar just makes you 'beat some one with your sword untill told to do it to some one else') and coordinate everyone changing to that guy without tipping the other team off that a target call is going off. You can also see foes using skills while you target them, to allow you to use fast interupts on them.

If you hold ctrl while activating a skill, it says (in chat) "I'm using Galrath Slash on assmonkey_05" or if you hold ctrl while hitting space it will say "i'm attacking soandso" and put a little target call box on the group menu, clicking that changes your target to the called target. You can also hit controll and target the spell being cast by a foe to make it say "The_healer is casting ressurection".

It has alot of controll options i wish more mmo's would snag.

The videos could have definitely used a top-down view on the entire map if possible. In one of the final matches, IQ (I think) just started running through a coral reef(?) and the announcers mentioned them taking damage from that area. So far I've put like 2 hours into my box copy of Guild Wars so I had no clue shit like that existed on the maps. The announcers just suddenly came out with "ohh yeah, btw there is a giant catapult that just killed 6 people. "When I played beta, the only pvp map was about 1/10 of the size of those maps and it was just a straight deathmatch, no terrain damage or NPCs.

Do you still have to go through the single player to get certain skills? If so, are the skills really important to a good build?

there's (since some time before factions) been most of those things. there's guild vs guild battles where you defend your guild's keep. there's pretty big ones now a days.

You don't have to touch pve ever if you don't want to (it's not single player, though you could play it like that) the way it works now is that you can pvp in the random/team arena and build up faction for balthazar (the war god) you spend 1000 faction points to unlock a skill, 3000 for an elite skill, or 1-5k for items. once unlocked you can always make a character with those skills for pvp.

Though honestly a good run through the PvE game can yeild alot of skills fast if you don't hate it throughly.

I don't see the big deal with the PvE portion. I've always heard how horrible it is, but it seems pretty standard for a MMO. Suzy lost her flute over by the river, get it for her and get 300 exp and 25g bleh. I have no problem playing through the PvE portions.

I think I'm going to pick up Factions on the way home anyway. Assassins look fun in those videos.

If you find yourself being annoyed by the 'go get me 5 rat pelt' type misisons, press forward with the main story (listed in the journal as main missions). the missions in guildwars are some of my favorate things in mmo's. they're like doing an instance except much more mobile and fast paced. instead of going into a cave to kill mobs room to room, you may storm a keep, or guard an area from incoming waves.

My favorate mission from prophesies (thunder head keep) involves fighting to a keep (while avoiding the mursaat badasses), then guarding the king for a while. the keep has two entrances and 2 balista overlooking the gates. so you tend to have your ranged folks up on the walls hitting those when they're ready. The missions is designed in such a way that you tend to slowly fall back to just before the king, fighting off waves of mobs. it's like a scripted raid, only fun because it's single group content

This was a lot better than the lame WoW pvp vid I saw last week.

The big televised Alliance Tournaments in EVE are pretty sweet, I wish they did them more often.

Next one's coming up in August if I recall - they just released a new set of rules for it.

Cancel that. I get home and get greeted by this:

Quote:
Unable to Install.
The installer could not write Guild Wars to the specified directory. Please check that you have administrative access, that you have permission to install programs in the specified directory, and that there is sufficient space available on the drive.
It worked as of yesterday. Google tells me that it's caused by Norton, but I wouldn't wish Norton on my worst enemy, much less install it on my own PC. I have admin rights, don't roll with a firewall or anti-virus on my gaming rig, and I have 120GB of free space. GuildWars.com has nothing on the subject so it looks like I'm fucked until they get back to me.

Got a link where I could check it out? Is it aired in any particular country or just online?

It's webcasted from the EVE Online site, with announcers and such. There have been three tournaments televised so far, roughly bi-yearly. The next one is coming up in August - I'm sure if you keep an eye out you'll see the announcements.

Winning Thunderhead Keep mission at master level solo with only henchmen was one of the craziest, most exhausting hours I've played in a video game.

I haven't played my Assassin in ages and their PVE skills have been upgraded a fair bit since then. Back when I did play though they were pretty ordinary in PVE (very squishy for a close range fighter) but they were unholy assrape terror in PvP. Rangers were the only class I ever had problems with one on one.

That's another thing. Anyone who's ever played an "archer class" in an MMO and not liked them needs to play a GW Ranger, 100 kinds of kickass.

Some days I spent more time watching top matches on Observer mode than I did playing my own char. Learnt huge amounts watching crazy Korean killers play.
