I know some people that are CMs of other online gaming communities, and it's a lot worse than you might assume for these folks. Please note, I'm not defending the personality flaws of a CM.

First off, the CM is in most cases, one of the newest additions to the company team. In most cases, these people are overlooked in the marketing process, as established relationships with gaming magazines take precedent over the internal website. In some cases, there is some kind of marketing revenue generated from giving exclusives to outside publishers rather than posting it free of charge on your company site.

Secondly, some of the blame falls on the department head of these community teams. They're the one on the executive team that is most directly responsible for establishing relationships between their online department and the rest of the company (read: devs and marketing). If you see a trend like the one posted above (read: liar), then it's likely the person overseeing those individuals, rather than the individuals themselves.

Third, this job is still fairly new. Moderation and administration of forums may be an established position, but it's one that's largely amateur in nature. Websites such as these rarely adhere to any sort of consistent policy and/or procedures set forth by corporate human resources.

Lastly, the trolling/idiot/etc traits are likely the most representative of each particular CMs' personality. If someone's an idiot, it's likely because they're not taking the time to develop a little product knowledge. If they're a jerk, it's likely because that's how they manage stress. Those are the traits that ultimately get folks fired and/or rearranged.

In the end the company's management will set the tempo for exclusive information and the trend in half-truths but it's the CM's responsibility for their personality flaws. While Tseric may have had some other less-desirable traits, it was his own lack of anger management that got him a push to the unemployement line.

Anyways...

Honestly I can't remember the last time I've been -glad- about something a CM, or shit, any blue poster has said. Even Tigole has gone batshit insane these days. "RAIDERS LIKE CLEARING TRASH MOBS!!!"

It's true. I've even heard that several medical supply companies are making WoW-themed catheters and urine bags to sell to the raiding community! They're also considering an Everquest brand....
