Exteel - New mech MMO/FPS game

Saw this beta while signing up for the Tabula Rasa beta. Looks pretty interesting. Figured might as well throw it out here too.

Exteel

Only thing I saw I didn't like is you can buy up grades with real cash.

The game is free. How else do you expect them to stay in business? Plus, it isn't like you are buying gold and then buying items you can use forever. You are buying items that have limited use based on the elapsed time you have it while you are playing.

So it's like buying gold and then buying limited use consumable items...?

You make no sense sir.

Right because Guild Wars Does the same thing, which is by the same company btw, to make money... oh wait... no they don't do they. They charge for the game and that's it. yeap that's the only way a non-monthly fee game can make money. *rolls eyes*

The Korean model of play for free, buy upgrades is popular in Asia - doesn't translate well in the states.

There is one game at least that has done this successfully in the states, Maple Story, 2d sidescroller mmorpg grindfest with a cash shop where you can purchase items that have limited use, most are 30, 60, or 90 days use.

So it can work, but you are right, it isn't very popular.

More than likely, although a MechWarrior MMO would be pretty badass.

As long as they get aiming right and I have a chance to dodge most shots in my light mech, yea, a Mechwarrior MMO would rock.

They actually did almost make one. I believe it was EA who was developing it. You can find out more info here on what happened: Multiplayer BattleTech 3025 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The beta freakin' ruled, too, and was pretty darn near a playable release game. It's sad that they cancelled it.

Anyway, they must be doing pretty well off, because I have seen advertisements for the game on the back of EGM, and on many sites on the net (IGN, Myspace, etc.). The Cash Shop in the game does work really well, but it's hard to say exactly why with the uniqueness of the title and its young playerbase.
