they have their uses. The Ishkur is still a decent ship for what it is.

Between getting T2 Drones skills and T2 blasters skills you've got a long ways to go to max out your Gallente char for just missioning. Capital ships like carriers are the next step, but that's about 3-4 months AFTER getting battleship 5 before you can fly one safely.

I'd say go max out T2 drones and T2 guns, it's looong but more than worthwhile since the skills are portable and required for most capital ship skills anyway. Then maybe train up for HACs/Recons since they're pretty fun for PVP and do well in missions. Though if you aren't in a corp that has the BPO's for them they're not worth it--180+ mill for HACs is too much--but if you can get ishtars for 70-80m each you're set. Hard to argue with 60mill domis though, it's great flying a throwaway battleship that costs less than its rigs :P

ok here is the 1 million dollar question:

im a caldari player, and i spent great ammount of my SP on missiles as offensive weapons

i read from different ppl that missiles are underpowered rispect guns but i've not fully understood why

other than travel time, what makes guns superior to missiles?

if we compare 2 characters with equal ammount of SP (1 missiles, 1 guns), guns are superior for the dps? the accurancy against both small and bigger ships? what?

It's just easier to sploit turret strength in combat (instant damage, higher dps/alpha) than missiles (they ignore range and tracking).

The only place missiles fall short really is fleet battleships.. everywhere else they are fine. Some of the caldaris good ships use alot of rails too tho so its good to train them up eventually.

Alpha strike can be a factor on gate camps. When you want to shoot someone and insta kill them with your gang before the jump or warp away, then guns become far superior to missiles.

so, its only the flight time that makes them inferior?

not the dps?

time to train missile projection 5

Missiles are also affected a lot by signature radius and velocity of the target, IE: they can be pretty useless against small fast targets. But there are missile types that are specialized for that.

Yeah sig and speed affect all weapons. Another advantage guns have is critical hits (wrecking etc). Though that glancing hits swing it the other way too, an experienced captain can keep his targets in his optimal envelope and exploit that advantage.

missiles are pretty awesome for fighting rats. They are predictable and good damage. In fleets they can be just slow though. By the time a bs targets a ship and launches its volley and the missiles get there, theres a good chance that whatever you were firing at has died. For this reason, ravens often get to be the "GET IN TEH BUBBLE" bitch that fights close range, they arent considered snipers. This makes your life expectancy a lot shorter than most bs's.

All told, there just too many better reasons to fit guns than there are for missiles. The delayed damage is only good in situations where you likely would of won anyways with turrets.

Thanks for the replies, PMs, and in-game answers. The EVE community seems amazingly nurturing so far. Some random person gave me an Imicus and wished me luck.

I'm in about 6 hours of play and 30 hours of reading. Almost everything I come across involves combat or industry, but I'm curious about the socio-political avenues available. That's what really hooked my interest. The 10k page threads here describing the social workings of this game are like nothing I've ever seen before. It's reminiscent of the guild/alliance drama of EQ in its prime - the shit that made you read your server forums for hours a day and breathed life into an otherwise static husk of color and repetition. It's what's missing from WoW and what makes WoW so easy to walk away from.

Is politics/social interaction some kind of viable path or just a sidecar to military-industrial corp success?

Hey now, there are a few good Caldari PvP ships And for small groups, the weakness of missiles isn't as glaring as big groups.

yeah, in small gangs missiles are just fine. Certain ships make missiles useless/near useless, but thats true with most weapon setups. Caldari definately have ships that can be used just fine in fleet combat. Rokh is a decent rail bs, though on the pricey side. and of course, they fly the all important fleet "someone bring the shield boosts?" osprey.
