Hey vynde theres really no need for people to say ignorant things like that i really doubt you'll find ANY shallow gamers on this board buying games cause they look pretty, and who are you to tell someone "this games not for you".

And people not only pay for beta, they have been for nearly a year now. In fact it took me 3 seconds to google up someone selling a vanguard:soh beta account for 200$.
http://www.realpoor.com/Selling_Vang...ey_t47675.html

Just earlier tonight I spoke with an old friend who is still playing EQ1. He told me that he's about to quit playing because he's getting kicked out of the dorms and will only be able to play on his girlfriends laptop, which can handle wow with decent fps. After dwelling on that a moment I realized that Vanguard will never compete with that...and I like it. I like the fact you've got to have a badass computer to run it beautifully. honestly less retards

From what I've heard the new Thestra revamp is really a step in the right direction for VG. Apparently a lot of the newbie quests are quite well done, and the new cities/areas look great.

Says who? It's got to be doing something right - if people don't like a subscription-based products, they'll just stop paying for it (see: Pretty much every MMOG released by SOE, Vanguard six months post-launch).

So it's EQ2-at-Launch, then?

It seems that the Thestra revamp is a continuation of a trend that began with the goblin/orc starting areas, which, from what I understand, blew every other starting area out of the water as far as content, completion and dare I say, "fun".

Once again, the impression I get from the design style of this game is that it is being built by adding layer upon layer over the entire stretch of canvas (see my previous post regarding the "Bob Ross" analogy). Each layer drastically improves sections that already have a solid foundation, and at the same time lays foundations where there aren't any yet, and strengthens foundations that are still "barebones".

I'm sure one of the reasons for this approach is due to the sheer size of the world (big ass canvas to cover). Another reason is probably because of how fluid they are attempting to make the world. What I mean by this is that the land flows very logically and smoothly together. It doesn't feel at all like a bunch of zones that were crafted separately and then strung together. You can literally see miles into the distance- 3 or 4 zones ahead of where you are (on a side note there are actually mobs in game so big that they can be seen from zones apart). What's more you can go to just about any place you can see. And my point is, because of this, I imagine you kinda have to lay everything out at first in a very raw and basic form, having just the basic identity of the land-type you want, then go over it with a layer of detail, then another, then another, adding more and more content and polish, but adding it in a very even and spread out way.

Honestly, in many ways the game is a very different game than it was a mere month ago, and I bet that in a month it will be very different than it is now. This trend will probably continue every few weeks until launch. I really doubt the people that were in beta 2 or even beta 3 and gave up playing will even recognize much of the game (except the sky and the music) by launch. Most areas retain a certain "feel" that they had before new layers are added, but the improvements that have occurred so far in many areas are really quite remarkable.

I'd bet the total number of people who've stopped playing WoW outnumbers those who've stopped playing EQ (or any other Sony game).

As someone who often posts on those boards...if they're anything like that in-game, then WoW will be remember as fairly civil compared to these guys.

For example...

The map MUST GO! I'm all for alternate rule set servers, but I will firmly say: No server can have the gps map! It would be a *colossal* blunder to keep it in.

Game here
Wiki (which you will need) here. I strongly recommend that you read everything in the 'New to Dwarf Fortress' section.

I may do a thread for it in the Other Games board in a while.

Um yeah, it is quite a selling point. Larger potential user base = larger potential sales. I'm not at all talking about the quality of the gameplay, just the lower cost of entry to the game.

How many of you beta people that say the game sucks have gone beyond level 10? Level 20?
You can't judge a game on the first 15 levels, especially a grouping game on an underpopulated beta server. WoW beta was extremely popular because of two reasons:

The game was very polished (which vanguard isn't right now, we can all agree about that)
It was possible to meaningfully advance your character by soloing. I never grouped in WoW beta before level 15 or so but I was still playing every day because I knew that I could achieve stuff on my own and have fun. This is not the case with the Vanguard beta, from level 7 or 8 on if you don't have a group you are basically lost and can't do shit but grind. With the level curve as it is right now by level 9 you're ready to uninstall the game and free those 22 gigs of hard drive space because you need room for your porn, and most people do it: hence the empty beta server (well, that and the tech issues, Vanguard requires a good computer to look good at decent framerates, I won't deny that).

Now, granted, I haven't gotten above level 8 either (by the way, remove me from beta if that's NDA breaking, I don't particularly care I don't want to invest time in Vanguard, not while it's in beta anyway), but I'm not passing judgement because I realize that I absolutely do not have enough experience to talk about the game, be it to praise it or to criticize it. But most of you don't either, and don't get me started about the "I tried the game out at a friend's" or "I watched my friend play for 10 minutes" people. If that's all the experience you have with the game, kindly shut the fuck up.

I still haven't seen one well constructed post by someone who was in beta and reached a meaningful level telling us that Vanguard sucked and why. Please, by all means haters, prove me wrong, level 8 rogues in Brennan's Stead need not apply.
I've been on vacation, and still am, but when exactly more should I post? I don't think Vanguard "sucks," it's just simply not at the level of quality it should be at, and there are better alternatives out there at the moment. And as for how much time I've invested, probably about 30+ days played through my various characters.
