If done right on something like Xbox Live, a game like that could do incredibly well. I'd say it could rival WoW, not sure about 20m though.

Oblivion has been very successful (~2mill)and to run that, a monster computer is needed.
Let me put this into perspective for you.

I run Oblivion at 1680X1050, most settings up, and I get around 25-30 FPS.

My system is an Athlon XP 3200+, 1 Gb RAM, and a 6800 GT video card. This is hardly a monster by today's standards. And this game looks fantastic.

There are a few MMORPG's that I play right now that force me into low settings with the same system spec, and when anyone pops up on the screen I nose dive to 10 FPS. Otherwise I am about 25. If I switch to medium settings, I hit about 12 with no one on screen.

In short, don't compare Oblivion to other MMORPG's. Because it doesn't take a monster to run Oblivion well, and Oblivion blows other MMORPG's out of the water.

My computer is a Athlon 3000+, 1gb of ram, GeForce 6600. I played Oblivion at 1024x768 on medium settings and got 15 fps average. Turning the settings to low gave me an increase of 0 fps. That game ran like shit. Worse than EQ2.

If you had a vanilla 6600 of course it did. Unless you had a 6600 GT, I wouldn't even attempt to play the game. But a 6600 was a $90.00 card and a vanilla 6600 was cut to pieces. A 6800 GT BFG O/C which I had, was $399.99 last summer. And blows a 6600 (GT or vanilla) out of the water. Not only are you still dealing with a 128-Bit memory path, you are cut in pipes, core, and mem speed by volumetric shitloads.

Hey Brad,

How about a downloadable character creator like EQ2 and WoW have done...

oblivion/halflife blah blah run shit good money blah blah.
Both of these games came off as sequels with a huge established fanbase. Vangard doesn't have this at all.

Oblvion is the 4th elderscrolls, and all 3 games before it owned. I agree that they pushed the graphics bar. There was enough content there that they games would have owned using 8 directional sprites if they chose too.

Halflife running poorly? The original one? No. Quake 2 was a smooth running engine.

MMO engines suck, except WoW ;p

Except Vanguard isn't an MMO engine. It's the Unreal engine. An engine that runs awesome in other games.

You are completely ignoring the shittiest animations ever put into a game.

But modified for an MMO, which requires a bunch of recoding since the Unreal engine was made with single player games in mind. That it can be used as the base for an MMO engine shows how versatile it is but doesn't mean that it'll actually compare to other Unreal engine games.

Oblivion may of ran like shit for some people but dont ever compare it to EQ2. I have a geforce 7800 on my work comp, and a new 7900 on my home comp now (yay) and I can run oblivion with everything set to max on both... I cant even attempt to do that with EQ2.

If I put everything in EQ2 to max its a slide show in 90% of the world. Its not that EQ2s graphics are 'that' intense either just the system itself is very shitty. I wish they would put ALOT more effort into getting EQ2 to run better instead of newer content. As much as I like to see games get flooded with stuff to do.. its always nice to be able to run the game first

Edit: This is also one of the reasons I think EQ2 fails to bring in new players. If you run EQ2 on max its really pretty but unplayable, if you have a nice system you can get EQ2 to look ok. If your system is a little dated EQ2 has AC1 style graphics and thats completly unacceptable. Not everyone has a $1000+ machine so alot of people out there have to play EQ2 with shitty graphics... and why do that when even ghetto systems can run WoW looking good? Sony has made leaps and bounds in the gameplay department for EQ2 but now they need to really spend some time getting it to run better.

Wait, are we talking about Oblivion or Vanguard now? I'm confused.

Considering how shitty Vanguard runs, in comparison to other Unreal-tech games, I don't know how versatile I would say it is.

unreal wasnt made to run maps as big as the ones VG uses i think =/

I want a fucking mmo that uses oblivions style of combat, everyone talks bullshit about making harder games but no one actually ever does the shit that would make the games harder... lol autoattack is harder in vanguard than in WOW lol ezmode WOW! Fuck playing a pure melee in oblivion was one the most interesting and challenging things ive had to do in a rpg game in a long long time.

I think a lot of the problems with this whole "it runs on Unreal!" discussion stem from a fundamental misunderstanding of just what licensing a game engine entails. It's not like SGO call up Epic, get a copy of the game engine, and happily plunk in their own graphics, world geometry, and animations and voila the game's done. Even for an FPS, I'd imagine there's still a lot of work involved tailoring a licensed game engine to your game design's requirements. It's not a "turn-key" solution. When your game is a MMOG, that work would exponentially increase.

Think of the Unreal engine (or any other licensed engine) as basically a starting code base that's not much more than a jumping off point. I'd be willing to bet that once VG hits release, the vast majority of the code will be SGO's work.

Subsequently, it's up to SGO to get the game's performance up to par, and it's pointless to draw any comparisons to other Unreal games. If it runs like shit or looks like shit, and I'm not saying it does, it's largely SGO's fault. On the other hand, if it runs awesome, credit would be due to SGO in that case as well.

I would put L1 and ffxi way before eq2 -.-
