Okay I'm finally in the beta. First issue: game didn't download the right dx9 dll (unable to post on beta boards for up to 72 hours so I'm posting here -- I don't believe this is NDA breaking). You can get into the game by renaming the _28 dll that did get downloaded into _31 dll which the game wants. I've reported the bug via the ingame system.

Second issue -- what was the sound problem that was causing performance lag -- can't find it in this massive thread -- or maybe it is in another thread. Can someone repost it. Is it as simple as just turning off sound for now?

That's because that dll is not from the game, but from microsoft. You need the Oct 2006 DirectX update installed. I believe there is a December update you can download(for DirectX). At the very top of the Vanguard patch notes it says you need this update(Oct 06) to run Beta 4.

I think 4 years or whatever the exact time frame they took on EQ1 to "invent the wheel" seems reasonable, hell if it took them longer that would seem normal. After all, its not like Brad and Jeff had made a major MMO before back in 1999.
Side Note:
Combat and class balance was all a copy from SojournMUD which so happens to be the MUD "Aradune" played, and if I remember correctly, he played a Ranger. When EQ first came out, I remember saying to myself, this is exactly like SojournMUD with graphics down to Max Level and Class selection except instead of Magicians, Sojourn had Conjurer's.

Just saying you are in the beta is NDA breaking. And yea what soygen said if you woulda read the patch notes at the top is a link to the DLL you need.

I'm pretty sure I have it -- but will recheck. In any event I changed the name to _31 and when I reran the game downloaded _28 again.
So this file is coming from Sigil.

Edit: Soygen and Bongk are correct -- I had thought I had the Oct directx download but apparently didn't -- must have been on my other comp. I lose at testing.

Side side note, SojournMUD is still around and active, although it is now known as TorilMUD. I have always felt Sojourn isnt given enough credit for its contributions to the mmo scene. Although it was only one of many DIKU-based MUDs, it is one of the best.

Side x3 Note
I played SojournMUD right after it's first wipe (Who remember's prewipe Berserkers?) for a few years. Jeeze that was about a decade or so ago. I love SojournMUD. I played Toril for a while but couldn't put up with some the players I was rolling with. I played DURIS alot because the PVP was kinda cool. Full loot PVP ftw.

Best part was that Sojourn's grind was just as bad as EQs grind. .. er did I say best part?

IMO Sojourn was the best DikuMUD out there. It even had raiding. Tiamat anyone?

Grind spreads out the field. Imagine a Marathon at the start and then imagine it 20km later. People have room all of a sudden. They can even try to catch the guy in front of them. Same with penalties for failure. Not having a penalty for failure is like playing Poker for play-money. It simply doesn't work, because people have nothing to lose.

I understand that of course. It's a necessary evil in my opinion. I don't think anyone actually enjoys doing it from a gameplay perspective. However I don't want stir up THAT argument again though.

People getting a performance hit from audio are generally those with motherboard sound that is likely using out of date drivers. If you have Realtek onboard you will suffer the most. A decent Creative Labs card makes all the difference in the world; upper end X-Fi users actually report a boost to FPS. Just make sure you switch the setting to 'Hardware' in the audio settings window. This is a known issue and we are working to minimize the hit to those with onboard sound.

What's better, a SB Live Value edition, or Realtek?

Yes, I go audio on the cheap

First I'm hearing of this, no pun intended. I have onboard and who knows how out of date my drivers are. Will check this tonight.

I use a standard SBLive! Not sure if it's value or not, but it supports EAX2.0 at least. Only difference in value/normal is a connector that you'll prolly never use anyway.

Anyhoo.. sound on/off, drivers, nothing changes my performance, so I would have to say those don't seem affected by the performance hit.
