does everything need to be a damn mmo. last couple posts all about upcomming mmo's made me think. a couple are fine but i'd never commit to more than 1 mmo at a time, theres just no time, single player games are still needed badly. tie figher 2 is also needed badly wtb

Now that Blizzard is making all that paper each month? Yes, everything has to be an MMO and will be an MMO. Single player games needs a preservation society to save them at this point.

Has there ever been any talk of a true SWG Sequel (i.e. NOT an expansion?)

Certainly, the Star Wars universe is still begging to be done "right".

Yes and no. The problem, really, is that the Star Wars universe has a built-in "uber" class in the Jedi. Either you lump their power level in with everyone else and people cry havoc and claim it's not Star Wars, or you make them better and you get a world where 90% of the players are Jedi, which is just as much not Star Wars. You can make them NPC-only, which might be the most workable solution, but then you're competing against single player games which can afford to let their players be Jedi.

The pencil and paper roleplaying games worked because PnP players enjoy playing gimped characters for the sake of the story, and because there is overarching control of the plot and the world. There's also the fact that PnP characters are relatively disposable compared to MMO characters, and as such it's not a problem to put in the many very unforgiving checks and balances.

The CRPGs work because they're on rails and you can limit character progression and power relative to the point in the storyline, and it doesn't really matter if someone manages to make an untouchable death ninja because they're the only ones who it effects.

I think that Jedi are the reason you're only going to see inexperienced companies willing to try and take up the Star Wars banner - it's a giant design flaw that's built right into the setting and any class balance dev worth their salt will see it and run screaming.

Pity you SWG fans, the license is in the hands of George Lucas. Can't wait for the soon to be announced "Mc-Donald's Tie Fighter vs Imperial Shuttle Toy Ships Challenge 2006" for ps3.

Disagree.

I think if done right then a playable Jedi class could add alot to a future MMO.

In fact the way SWG originally handled Jedi was almost spot on, the endless theorising about how to become a Jedi was quite fun..how many SWG players spoke to every single NPC in fact he was the one that would start the Jedi quest? And after that, the 3 deaths and you're out rule was quite good too..it was only after SOE caved into the whiners that Jedi started getting out of hand.

I was going to post some thoughts on the ideal Jedi system, but seeing as how it was 3 years ago since I played SWG I need to think on it over night.

I disagree. There is nothing to suggest that all Jedi were or are uber. In fact, much the opposite seems the case from the recent 3 movies.

Example: Remember when all those Jedis were killed off towards the end of Ep3? Some by a bunch of guys with blasters no less! Thats solid evidence to suggest that the pure uberness is attached to certain persona that just happen to also be very powerful Jedi than the Jedi themselves.

That makes them perfectly in line with any other MMOG that has its share of ubers, be it Medivh/Arthas/Thrall/whatever in WoW or you can pick one of the main storyline guys from another game like EQ.

Its not at all harder to balance a jedi class by itself than any other class once you distinguish between "uber jedi from known movie" and "some jedi you are". If you suck at making MMOGs of course while a mongoloid director with visions of grandeur is calling the shots from the background, its an impossible task.

I think what they should concentrate on is making an MMORPG where Jedi are mixed in with everyone and have fallen down in the ranks so to speak. Almost like an armegeddon of the Jedi, where finally 95% of the races in Star Wars rebelled, got sick of the Sith and the light fighting each other and creating more wars, and make them mix in with everyone else. Then tie it into a story set way in the future from the original trilogy explaining the fall of the jedi and why they are now just ordinary "professions".

The good news is that you're still alive. The bad news is that that's the good news. Also, you have no legs.

There is no way to have Jedi as a regular and 'gimped to be balanced' class and still call it Star Wars. Personally I'd prefer a game actually trying to balance them while retaining the flavor instead of 'questing' for a class or just not having them. ROTS showed that Jedi can easily get fucked, especially regular Jedi and not the heroes we see in the movies.

Star War games :[ :[ :[ :[

The idea of your character having an alter ego which is a jedi is still the way to go imo. You just need a way to balance the penalties of using the force on non-jedi characters. Also keep in mind there are other badass in the world besides Jedi. Look to KOTOR for ideas. The assassin robots, wookies, the fighting chicks(forgot their names). SWG used the TKA (terris kai something) which in the stories where trained to defeat Jedi, problem was they made Jedi stronger.

I think SWG had the right idea at 1st using your powers or LS would get bounty hunters on your trail. They just had horrible gameplay behind it and couldn't balance it for shit.

EDIT: To add to that the design doc for SWG is actually pretty good, where they failed is implementing it. Also the timeline, which many of us in Beta 2nd phase told them was a mistake. If ever there was a case of not listening to your fan base this is it.

No but you'd be hard-pressed to find any single-player games now without multiplayer options of some kind.

Jedi die left and right in the books, only the main characters have the super powers.
