+17 Internets | Yeah Darkness Falls was such a great dungeon. In addition to the above issues, I'd say another issue attributing to the death of DAOC was the way Mythic handled nerfs. Instead of a nerf bat they used a nerf nuclear missle. Usually the the allegedly imba ability/skill/item or whatever was made utterly useless after the round of nerfing. |

Kind of glad they dodged what could have been. Like it mattered, I ended up playing a Valewalker (Hey, look! It's a cloth caster! ... Where the fuck did that scythe come from?!) A question for anyone that happens to still be playing: is Dragonfang still fucking godlike? | |

+4 Internets | Valewalker was a great class, and for some reason underpopulated. If you were good with their positionals you could deal out some serious beatings. It's a shame DAoC had a lot of problems, because they really did have some great ideas. Their combat system is still my favorite out of any MMO I've played. The positionals, reactionaries, etc were all very fluid, and they are the only MMO I've seen that did shield skills well. |

What I find amusing about DAOC is that while Darkness Falls was considered the best thing about that game (PVP competition for PVE access), it was the lack of initial PVE content that prevented it from ever being an EQ killer. Then the introduction of artifacts and master levels (PVE content) killed PVP. Still trying to wrap my head around that one.

Add Planetsides Client Side Hit Detection (CSHD)and Everquests "stare at the spell book for 20-40 levels (I forget how long) while medding codes as two more of the worst implemented things in a MMORPG ever. Actually with Planetside, I could probably list a dozen more, but we might as well just stick with the fundamental errors on that one.

| DAoC could probly pick up and keep a few players with an out of combat regen sytem, be it food, decent pots or whatever. Population is a little light, a small shift in focus to support the solo player could help retention. They have the solo content available, but the downtime is horrible in the higher levels. Still think it's the best PvP gameplay out there in an MMO. |

| *If* (big if) Mythic was smart, they'd do something revolutionary and drop levels 1-49 all together. The leveling up content in that game is so terribly bad, and theres plenty of easy but tedious 'endgame' content to keep new players busy. Theres also no real progression of learning curve from 1-50, so eliminating them all together would be much better.

| Have they changed the movement/camera system at all in the recent expansions? I played from late 2001-2004 or so on Percival, and every time I've tried to come back the clunky camera system and movement system makes me log out within 5-10 minutes. Granted I was used to it when I played regularly, but after playing EQ2/WoW I can't stand going back to it. I remember having to press a button to swap to mouselook, and when you were in mouselook you couldn't click on anything with the cursor. |

| I had used WoW's controls on DAoC since two years before WoW was released, so it's definitely possible if you reconfigure everything. The defaults in DAoC always sucked HARD, and controls in general are quite clunky no matter of configuration. But you CAN mimic what WoW does. It isn't as smooth and polished, but it works. |

+1 Internets | With all the changes made to DAoC to make it more accessible, I dont think removing 1-49 would really do much after the early "Wow, I can get a 50 instantly" phase wore off. Everything is now so easy to do it doesnt really matter. The real problem is that going at it alone is almost impossible. You need friends, prolly 8 if you want a small guild PvP. You prolly also want those guys to have a good class makeup (not 4 warlocks, 3SMs, and a skald...). But, if you have those 8 friends, who are dedicated to play, that game can be a blast.

| It's been so long I can't even recall how the movement/camera system worked, but I doubt it would take much convincing to make me agree that it probably sucked. I quit not long after Darkness Falls - damn that was an awesomely brilliant dungeon back then, but I was scarred for life from what I recall as 2-3 weeks of killing (or standing in line waiting to kill) nothing but werewolves - but I do remember my Friar was the damn coolest class ever. Though of course I most likely only remember the good things about him and I never got him to end game (my main char was a Skald). |
