| Voice chat was around in early EQ but 300MHZ pentium II's, 56k modem connections connecting at 46k if your lucky and less capable server software made it a lot less useful. The speed and software of today make it very useful. People tend to forget the systems and connection we had back then. Original EQ: Required: Windows 95/98, Pentium 166+, 32MB RAM, Direct 3d or Glide compliant accelerator card with 4mb RAM, 500MB hard drive space, 28.8k+ internet connection, windows compatible sound card, mouse, keyboard. Recommended: Pentium 200+, 64MB RAM. Kunark bumped those up to: Required: Windows 95/98/00, Pentium 200+, 64MB RAM, Direct 3d or Glide compliant accelerator card with 8mb RAM, 600MB hard drive space, 28.8k+ internet connection, direct X compatible sound card, mouse, keyboard. Recommended: Pentium 266+, 128MB RAM. Velious: Required: Windows 95/98/00, Pentium 200+, 64MB RAM, Direct 3d or Glide compliant accelerator card with 16mb RAM, 600MB+ hard drive space, 28.8k+ internet connection, direct X compatible sound card, mouse, keyboard. Recommended: Pentium II 350 or greater, 128MB RAM, Direct 3D or glide compliant accelerator with 8MB video ram (yeah *less* than whats in required) Luclin: Required: Windows 98/2000,ME,XP, Pentium II 400 or greater, 256MB RAM, Direct 3d compliant accelerator card with 16mb RAM and hardware T&L, 450MB+ hard drive space, 28.8k+ internet connection, direct X 8.0 compatible sound card. Recommended: Pentium III or greater, 512MB RAM, Direct 3D accelerator with 32MB video ram with hardware T&L, 56,6K+ internet connection. |

| We might of had a Roger Wilco going back in the day in EQ but it was only able to do like 8 users max, also remember good headsets didn't really become available/affordable until competitive CS became really popular, unless you wanted one of those things that sat on your desk. |

Back in those days, the servers were seriously limited on how many people they could handle at once. Anything over 8 connections even on a solid SDSL line in my apartment would start to cause problems. By Velious, it wasn't hard to find a TS host though, and since Microsoft had stopped supporting GV almost immediately, most people switched. The sound quality sucked, but at least TS supported the GV "puck" device. The funny thing is, I hate and refuse to use Vent/TS now, and I really hope more games don't go the same route as DDO in making voice part of the client. Being expected to use it in a guild, at least at raids, is one thing. Being expected to use it with every fuck-up group you happen to join is a game-killer. | |

I played Socom on my PS2 a good bit before WoW came out, I'm sure other console fps's have a built voice as well. once you get used to it, it's no big deal. I'm sure the newbs would love it in pvp.

| there are several programs out there that will alter voices fairly easily. i host my guilds teamspeak server andit works very well (though i am waiting for the next version to be even better) if you just up the codec quality. as to integrated voice chat- ddo's voice chat is not QUITE fully integrated - the voice servers are hosted by gamespy. although i would like to see an mmo DO fully integrated voice chat WITH voice alteration so a male playing a female could speak in game and have the voice come out as a female...or a woman could have her voice come out as a male.... |

+13 Internets | I prefer text for a lot of things. you type it once, it stays there for everyone to read. You say something in voice and half the people don't hear because the other have were talking over the top so you have to explain it to them again and again. Really need integrated voice to text more then anything. |

I used to lead raid in EQ and I've learned to type fast so that information could come quickly. Maybe it wouldn't be enough for WoW since it's faster paced, but for EQ it was more than enough. In my experience, the only thing voice chats are necessary for is PvP where very quick reactions are the difference between a win and a lose (once again, I haven't gone past MC in WoW so I don't know for the other raids but I know my guild is still doing without vent or TS and is currently at C'Thun, so not that bad obviously). | As for the topic at hand, we didn't use vent for any raid ever, up until C'Thun. Even though I can type around 100wpm, it's just not feasible to type out instructions mid-fight. After successfully utilizing vent for C'Thun and seeing how smooth it made things, we've fully adopted it for Naxx. MT'ing for Noth, for example, it's real handy to let people know if I've missed 90% of my specials after a TP so that people can lay off DPS for a few seconds, which needless to say would not be possible while typing. |

| > Exactly. Once something is written in the chatbox, it's there to stay. until it gets pushed off the screen. in other news, i recently bought a logitech desk mic and the clarity is incredible. sounds better than most headsets, even sitting 2 feet away on my desk, and no douchebag headgear on my melon. $20 at best buy. |
