Initial Impression of EQ Progression Server

Debated on posting this at eqprogression.com but I figure its general interest, so...

I logged in and created an Erudite Magician (Ragnaros) on Combine.

Leveling in Tox wasn't very difficult at all. I started playing EQ seriously at the beginning of PoP so I never really experienced leveling in the starting zones. I just went to SWT and called it a day back then.

From a standpoint of someone who never got that initial nostalgic feel of EverQuest, I can say that I'm having a blast. I got my Mage to 7 and went to explore the Warrens. Seeing as how I'd only passed through there for my LoY quests I was pretty excited to be able to level there for the first time.

The old feeling of being in unfamiliar surroundings, wondering whats behind the next corridor was pretty amazing. I didn't get too far into the zone before a Kobold Sentinel aggro'd and I had to rush toward the zoneline. I gave a courtesy /ooc train! before being pummeled by the sentinel and zoning back in Tox.

Like I said, I'm having a blast so far. Hopefully it doesn't get old any time soon.

Kelethin is pretty wank, especially during US primetime. Worst case it took 10-15 minutes to get exp for a mob and occasionally you'd get it KS'ed.

Luckily I'm in the UK so I can be on when it's reasonably quiet and grind up some levels, not sure I have the patience to play EQ through another time after I quit on such bad terms during GoD.

Ranger seems horrible at low levels but I'll try and crack on through the levels so I can see zones like Sebilis, ToV, Kael etc. etc. again. Probably gets better once I get a few useful spells.

PS. Implement fire beetles in GFaydark for Flamelick kkthx.

Rangers were pretty good during baseEQ afaik, sucked metric fucktons of cock during Kunark, became a mascotte class during Velious and finally started moving up in the world from luclin on (hi Archery Mastery). Any EQ vet knows rangers have never really got rid of the lame jokes though

LGuk Lord is gonna be so camped. If I recall correctly, pre-Kunark the best dual weild combo is dual Yak, right?

I am surprised how much I am enjoying it. Even the old zones have a new feel but not too much (Nek, Ro etc). The game and its edge/challenge feels the same but the graphics and textures are somewhat improved.

This is the most fun I have had in a MMOG since EQ /

For raw DPS or for aggro?

For DPS you'll need Bloodfury (I think that was its name? from Cazic) and GPK.

All old accounts have been activated for 30 days. I am not sure if the crowds are people just poking around or longer term players looking for a change of pace. Will know around august which it is.

Yeah I'd say it'll settle down after a couple of weeks.

It's ok so far. Though this is gonna sound self-evident, if you are looking for an fantasy MMORPG that feels/plays like EQ with HUGE populations, you'll find it here. I'm only level 6, but I've seen/felt enough to at least invest another week into it.

The funnest thing I did yet? Nuked a mummy and a zombie to about 80% life in Nektulos, then trained them back to Neriak Entrance. Undead aggro is still around (they attack people close to them, even if someone is deep ont heir hate list.) Because I nuked them a few times, I could control them after each kill and train them around. I killed at least 50 people this way till someone in their teens finished em off..

The biggest problem I see that threatens progression is Population. It's a double edged sword. People are going to Combine/Sleeper to enjoy old, untwinked content with people... but the huge population influxes (650 gfaydark, 250 nektulos forest, etc,) are making spawns scarce. People don't level up quick to escape content, they level up quick to escape the masses and the competition FOR content provided by them. I'd like to take my time and enjoy EC, but I'd like to not have to KS/fight for xp at a one group camp against 6 groups.

Yes, it's oh-so-hilarious you're going around training people on purpose. Aren't you the same guy who admitted to using LOS and guard exploits to kill people in WoW, too?

Ha, yeah. Well, at least you CAN get banned for training in EQ. Of course, no one will notice when 400 people are in the same zone, but we all know what happens to the rep of people who do it over and over again in dungeons at higher levels.

EQ was always fairly nice for self-policing.

I don't think it'll be so on this server. Alot of these folks are just there for a little while, to get whatever fun they can get, then they'll be gone again. They don't care for their rep because they probably don't plan to stay. Lyenae especially is just there to annoy and grief, when he gets sanctioned by the community or banned he'll just quit, and probably post a rant here about how "soft" the EQ community got.
