If everyone on these forums donated 1g to the "get cad banned" fund, pretty sure you wouldn't be around for much longer.
Lay off, Cad is contributing to this forum.

i used to do this ALL the time in everquest. I had the biggest scam going ever and no matter how much i got reported no one ever did anything.

Box 1: "wts elite item"
Dupe: "I can offer X"
Box 1: "that sounds nice, but what i'm really looking for is (insert obscure but worthless item here)"
Dupe: "Hmm, ok. i don't have one though :*("

Box 2: "Selling (insert obscure but worthless item here)"
Dupe: "How much?!? lol"
Box 2: "(some price that's significantly cheaper than elite item is worth so dupe feels like he's being clever and getting a sweet deal)"

rinse, repeat, you are now rich.
yeah, i was a jerk...
Someone burned me with that on Terris Thule for 30k or so. Lesson learned.

A guy I know RL runs a gold site and said that he had 1000 of his accounts deleted in May.

I recently bought gold because I'm a lazy fuck this time, and my new guild isn't paying for everyones epic steeds like my old one was....

Anyways, the transaction was painless and amusing (the horrible Engrish on the call I got on my cell was the best, as was the obvious loooooooong distance echo and connection).

I got the money, including a 50 gold bonus for them not having 1k immediately, and friended the guy who sent me the money just to keep an eye on him.

Level 1, logs on a lot, only on long enough to send a mail (hmm..), and logs off. It's been a week or two since I did this and the same name is still used.

Let me reiterate. A level 1 nonguilded dwarf is sending massive amounts of gold to people and the subject of the email is a goddamned order number.

The shit's not rocket science, but they're just not afraid of being banned.

P.S. I felt justified in the purchase when a level 60 warlock started camping newbs in darkshire, I (47 warrior at the time) and a 27 priest kick his ass 6 times and camp him, and he gets away on an epic.

Level playing field and all.

Man 1000 accounts? Seems like if gold sellers have that many accounts it should be pretty easy to tell who they are. It would be nearly impossible that large numbers of those accounts aren't under the same name/credit cards. Just look for people with 100+ accounts or even 20+ and you'll find your gold sellers.

Blows my mind how much money there is to be made in the secondary market on these games.

i played on karana btw. and yes, this scam spread quickly once people got burned and started doing it themselves (revenge?) but i swear i was one the first. people arn't just dumb, they're greedy but to get this to work well you really need to be good at talking to people and you need to draw things out and make a rapport. once it got popular people spotted the cookie cutter simple strategy i posted from a mile away. also it wasnt so easy for someone to tell if an item was worthless. one of my favorite items to sell for 20k - 30k a pop all day was "dyn's dizzying draught". i'll let you guys look that one up back in the day people paid top dollar for rare dropped high level spells so asking for one in exchange for that uber item i was faking for sale didnt sound outrageous at all. the trick was that if you werent the class the spell was made for the details simply read: "Spell name, Classes: x, y, z, Level Required: CANNOT USE". Hence duping people with level 2 spells became possible. Since enchanter was the least popular class played (seemed that way to me anyway) i'd buy level 3 or 4 chanter spells for a few silver that sounded like they might be a high level spell. Also, i used random vendor trash drops from obscure zones and simply pawn them off as high level quest items. Seriously, who's to know?

Hah, I have to admit that I too took advantage of the unwitting in similar forms. To be honest, it was much harder back in Everquest than it ever was for me in Warcraft. Well, that's to be expected I guess since everyone in Warcraft is a gullable mouthbreather.

"omg epics"

Which simply reinforces my desire to hate anyone and anything that is associated with Warcraft at this point. Barring this messageboard, naturally (barely).
