I was actually impressed with that video. More "realistic" (as in less cartoon) wow, which to me is pretty cool.

From reading all of these Vanguard threads I was beginning to think the game didnt function at all. Screw innovation, I was under the impression the game wasnt even playable.

I would just like to say that its extremely frustrating for those of us who are trying to redownload the client (reformatted my HD) and we cannot because Fileplanet isn't letting anyone redownload. This has been going on for weeks now. You log into Fileplanet and follow the process from the beta email to download the client and when you click the download button it sends you back to the fileplanet homepage. Talk about frustrating.

I understand they're probably just letting it slide because as soon as beta 3 starts I hear they're switching to the SoE patcher system. But its frustrating that there are lots of people who want to play who can't play because of this stupid issue. And what do the tech support say about it?

Quote:
This is a known issue. Right now it appears that if you've downloaded the client before and don't have the saved cookie from that session then you'll be unable to download the client.

There is no eta for a resolution.

Thank you for your patience.
Well shit. Anyone know of another place to get it from? (Yeah Right)

Deja Vu!

I posted this exact same thing a few pages back and no one appeared to give a shit.

I concur that it is beyond absurd and I personally believe that it shows both poor management skills and a lack of concern for customers. Definitely off to a great start!

As someone who's been affected by this issue, I think it shows more accurately shows that fileplanet sucks dick.

To say it shows "both poor management skills and a lack of concern for customers." is more than a bit melodramatic and/or you're a fucking psycho.

I dunno who's idea the whole fileplanet setup is. Hiding the download client as an OS ISO image was also pretty dumb.

That impression was completely wrong. The game is very playable if you don't care about high detail settings. So far it plays like levels 1-15 in EQ, except there are no dungeons like Crushbone, Blackburrow or Befallen. You run around in a gigantic indifferent world and kill wasps, bears, snakes which will spawn on you every 30m regardless where you go. If you are lucky you will even find a tunnel in the wall, that's their idea of a "mini-dungeon". If you feel comfortable with that, then you should give Vanguard a try. They welcome every additional tester who keeps playing longer than a week.

HINT: If you like to explore at lower levels and die to the generic yard trash, just make a new character and start all over. It's easier than going through a death-loop while trying to get your corpse back.

Ok, if that's the case, the real question is, especially for those of you who have tested several betas before........

Are all these problems fixable in less then a year in your experiences? To become something even like EQ2 maybe?

The concern seems to be that what Sigil is selling won't really be on the table until well after the game goes live. Some don't seem concerned at all since they've resolved unfinished games to be status quo. How much of unfinished game people are willing to settle for seems to be the point of contention.

Aside from all that, to tell you the truth, I honestly didn't see anything in that video that made me want to rush out and buy it. Seems to be a whole lot of nothing over nothing. At this point, I think it was the thought of knowing what the "sekret" was that made people so furiously eager to find out.

This is software so everything is theoretically fixable. The question is: How much does it cost, how long does it take and are they willing to do it?

If the loss of potential customers counts for less money than it takes to change the game, everything will stay the way it is. This equation is also known from certain airlines when it comes to technical service for their airplanes.

The thing about Vanguard is that it doesn't really introduce any new concepts or ideas to the game. You might consider the diplomacy system new but I don't even know what it will be like, and it doesn't sound like its required.

Not only does it not introduce something new but it doesn't even re-use some concepts that have been proven to work out well. Auction houses or degree of instancing for a few examples.

Maybe the reuse of the FFXI renkei system and adding some UI aspect to the system. It's hard to say if it will be something that requires skill and on teh fly judgement calls. Or if it will just be like EQ2 crafting wack a mole the right key when you see a certain icon which can be done by a bot just as easy as a human player.

I guess what is left is the whole raid, end game. I don't think even beta testers can comment on that since its probably not even available yet. I'll believe it when I see it though.

I guess it just feels like Vanguard is more of a going back to 1st gen MMOs rather than being a next gen game. There just doesn't seem to be any new ideas that stand out to me as being cool new concepts for the genere. Stuff that other games in the future will copy.

A lot could be said about EQ2 also about not adding anything really new. But at least they take the good ideas out there and put them to use and incorporate them in some way into the game.

Like EQ2s KoS expansion. A lot of the mini zones gave me a chuckle. Kicking eggs to prevent add spawns on one boss (hello BWL) Or a zone where the more bosses you figure out how to skip you are rewarded with more treasure chests at the end (hmm where have we seen this before) They were still fun zones and a good step away from some of the blandness, predictable content in the previous DoF expansion.

Nothing new except a truely seamless world, player owned boats and sea travel, non-instanced housing, flying mounts, pets and horses with equipment and armor, localized economies, travel caravans, three different areas of advancement, classes that have to choose between two different paths of abilities, curses, and a weather system that affects spells and combat. But your right, no new concepts at all.

PS: I know somebody is going to bring up UO, but that was a 2D game so it doesn't count.

You're right. I just think we all need to chill the fuck out before my head completely explodes, and realize that it's a video game. Unless you work in the industry, there's no reason to get so pissed off about it.

No notes. No twenty paragraph responses discussing something you haven't even played. No need for developer responses to said posts.

Ah, fuck it. Die.

saw this in EQ1. Great they updated the graphics?

EQ2 lets you get your own little cloud flying mount already. WoW is going to have flying mounts and some content is only accessable if you have one. Coh/CoV lets you fly on your own. Not exactly anything new.

are you talking about mere graphical updates? Or are you talking about how I could give my pets yaks in EQ1?

nothing new here

IE CoH more closely resembling warlock summoning

The onlything new here is diplomacy. Which just sounds like a boring way to raise faction

You seriously don't consider this a new concept that has never been seen in a MMO before do you? There are MMOs that allow a ton more customization than what you are suggesting.

Finally something I haven't seen before. I've never seen this implemented and I doubt its really going to be a big deal if it even makes it into the game. If it rains I get -5 dps or what?

Seriously, what is Vanguard adding thats new that MMOs fans are going say 'wow cool cool idea, I hope xxx adds that too' Or heck, just something new that I can tell my friends about to try to get them interested into the game.

Since when can you own boats in EQ? Not even Google knows about this.

EQ2 does not have flying mounts. The clouds are like griffins in WoW. WoW currently does not have flying mounts, so it's a new feature.

Giving your pets yaks in EQ1 is not the same thing as pet equipment in Vanguard.

I haven't played the game so it very well might be boring, but it is new.

I don't see other games where a class have to make a choice which kind of shape shifting he wants to do for the rest of his characters life at level 10.
