WoW now owns 50% of the MMORPG market

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060601-6964.html

Has any other MMORPG ever made up this much of the market?

UO had 100% when it came out.

EQ had more than 60% when it came out.

So yes.

edit. Also, whoever wrote that article doesn't have much experience in MMO's and when I read things like "the game has, for example, the best-looking "mini-icons" (used to indicate items in your inventory) of any game that I've seen", my brain hurts

UO did not have 100% when it came out. People need to stop pretending it was the first MMORPG.

Ok, even with MUDs and the like, it was over 50%

Happy?

Lotta the more recent growth on the charts has been due to their regional launches, think its slowed down and leveled off here in america and the other areas will probably do likewise.

I'm just hoping that introducing this many new, non-MMPOG players to the genere will allow a lot more niche games to flourish as they try out other options over time.

How anyone can truly believe WoW has 50% market share is beyond me. They include WoW numbers for Korea and China and the like, without including all MMOs from that region.

Either you cut out Korea and China WoW numbers, and they don't have 50% share, or you include ALL Korean and Chinese MMOs, and they don't have 50% share that way either.

Conclusion? 50% Market Share's assumptions are faulty.

Note: SirBruce's assumptions are not faulty, I'm referring to the author of the article.

If you're going to include muds, it would be more like 10%, if that.

And yet, if anyone dares to suggest that EQ is losing customers, you go mental.

On the contrary, if you read what I wrote in that other thread I said that the people asking why it wasn't losing numbers need to re-evaluate, given that we simply don't know if it is or not. It probably is.

So, honestly, I have no clue whatsoever how you derived the above.

*EDIT* Oh. Let me guess, you got the above from my first reply to the thread. I "go mental" when people ask the same question that's been asked 87 million times before. I could care less if EQ is dying or not. Those aren't the same thing, not at all.

But hey, if you have me figured out, maybe I can just cue you in the future so I don't have to actually say anything.
