Also, I thought that the BitTorrent protocol itself forced you to enable uploading to the swarm, unless you don't mind being stuck at 5kb/s download speeds?
No, if your client lies about how much it's uploading you can disable upload np.

Want to tell us how? I love being stuck behind a firewall when I'm actually not.

Then you agree that the problem is on Blizzard's implementation of the Bittorent protocol. So third party or not, there will be issue until they fix the damn thing.

Yeah I know exactly what you're talking about. Well, I don't know how much this is frowned upon, but you just need to decompile the downloader, there are pretty user friendly tools for this around the web.

Edit:

I looked around a bit and you can just use a resource viewer to do this, don't actually have to decompile it. Look for "PE Explorer" on the web. The torrent is a resource file called TORRENT_###.res. Rename that to TORRENT_###.torrent and you're good to go.

If this is out of line for these boards I apologize and please delete this post. But considering we're all pretty pissed off about the downloader, I don't feel that bad for posting scriptkiddie hacks like this.

The best thing about the background downloader, is if you deleted it when it originally came out (you know, since turning it off didn't turn it off and they didn't tell people what it was), you had to either have someone mail you their copy of it, or reinstall the game / repatch from 1.00 because the game cannot patch without that file, and the patch won't reinstall it.

luckily i just have it renamed, no big deal.

Yes, but allowing widespread use of third party clients would make it even worse.

As is I don't use it.

Bah, false.

Let people download the fucking thing and just seed it themselves. That's what *has* happened in the past and will continue to happen... I always sniff out what the .torrent file is and use ABC then just track the damn thing to my friends using azureus.

If I could use my own client I'd leave it open at a suitiably limited rate instead of maxing out and killing my connection. So you'd get 1:100 ratio out of me instead of the 10:1 I do right now (bonus: I'm usually patching very early, so you're missing a GOLDEN seed who just disconnects immediately instead of further helping spread)

Also, the Blizz downloader can download from a set HTTP location, which is how it gets jumpstarted/can work with peers turned off
