The ONE thing it had going for it was gameplay freedom, which more or less allowed players to improve upon the experience by themselves.

Again, you have to be realistic in your expectations for a new MMO coming out, and right now, I think developing a MMO with the freedom of UO and having enough content to appease every single person (the blacksmiths, raiders, pkers, waffle makers, real estate agents, bodyguards, diplomats, politicians, policemen, abstract artists) would be nigh impossible, and maintaining it would be even more of a nightmare.

As far as game freedom goes, I think V:SoH is the next step in that type of game (after SW:G), even though that's not it's focus, purely because of the lack of other games even attempting it because of the problems with customer retention (if you put 500 hours into a character, get pk'd and lose all your stuff, what's to keep you playing?). There's a reason UO's empty now, it's the same reason SB's empty, and every other MMO that's attempted it. You need to have SOME TYPE of controlled enviroment. Complete player freedom DOES NOT work.

Good lord this is a horrible post. So wrong on so many levels. I was the prey and not the predator for most of my UO career and loved every second of it. You have no idea what you are talking about. Nostalgia has nothing to do with it: UO is flat out the best MMO every released, relative to market at launch. The only legitimate complaints I have seen regarding it (aside from it's later castration via Trammel) were it did a very poor job of equalizing players with different connection speeds, and various exploits such as UOA, etc.

I especially like your second to last sentence. Yeah, UO must be empty now because it sucked, not because either A. it is like ten fucking years old or B. they totally changed almost every aspect since launch that made it what it was.

Edit: Finished reading thread, scaled back personal attacks. Rest of post still stands. Also, WTF on comparing it to a single-fucking-player game as your justification that it sucked technologically. We all know those comparisons are real winners.

Relative to market at launch? What market? Free MUD's and Meridian 59?]

Who are you to say I have no idea what I'm talking about? I played the game.

If it was so great, how come...

A. A game like it was never released again
B. They changed so many aspects

There's nothing else to compare it to really, other than EQ1, which destroyed it the next year. Also, the "single player" distinction really doesn't have much to do with graphics. It does a little bit, but not to the extent of UO's excuse for graphics (did they just rip those out of all the old ultima games?).

faddor is completely right. too many times i was the pray too.. and that was just as fun as being the predator. so many evenings i would be running for my life in deceit. not only from the poison eles and liches, but from Jack.. oh god Jack..

never felt adrenaline like i felt in that game in any other, including FPS's or raids.
