Ahh, fuck it, I'll say it again. Progression without adventuring.

| I mudded through UO as well. The grid just didn't add an extra dimension to gameplay like EQ did with positioning. Besides I was a DIKU fan and prefered the more combat-oriented muds. The whole tradeskilling thing still seems silly to me coming from a background where you could just sit down and create whatever items popped into your head from scratch as well as design your own mobs and dungeons. Clicking combine 452435254 just to get a bad piece of gear just isn't compelling. Olio |

I suspect he's not talking about getting ganked and looted, but rather one of the many house exploits which allowed people to steal the house (or castle) and everything in it. Or even if you did just get ganked at the wrong time you could lose your key and that was almost as bad as the exploits. I just never found a game where you could die and lose everything on you and just shrug it off like it was nothing to be particularily fun or interesting. That's certainly not what I would call "designed right."

| losing stuff on your body was no big deal.. maybe 400gp usually, which was nothing. if you were a newb just starting out then you lost nothing but maybe a training sword. if you lost your house by losing your key, you deserved to lose it because you were stupid. a friend of mine lost his that way, and he blamed himself because he stupid. housing exploits were blown way way out of proportion. negative things can (and should) happen in a world like that, and if you want a world like that, you have to accept that fact. not a 2 minute corpse run, but more profound negative things. i surmise if the game is good enough, then people will enjoy being immersed in a world like that. (we've yet to see another game like uo.. no, swg, sb, daoc don't count). it was designed right. |

| if you want proof of why uo was fun.. for most people (your mileage may vary) that played it, they didn't care about items, skills (you wanted gm, but no one cared that much), rank, exp, none of that. all you cared about was logging into the game world and playing and interacting. that's really all the reason i and everyone i played with logged in. i didn't look at bars or levels or purplez (yes, looked at skill numbers.. but again, not nearly as much). i want a world like that again. |
