A company disobeying orders from the publisher to release early? That's certainly not something that MMO players have dreamed of since EQ:SoL.

OMG ITS CUZ VG SUCKS AND MSG TOLD THEM SO!!!!TWELVE1212@@211!

Well, I guess this change is for the good. It shows that Brad is trying to keep his word: no release until ready. Buying back the publishing rights probably cost a good amount of money and also puts a lot more burden on Sigil to distribute the game.

Good call by Sigil for pushing the release date when the game is ready but even though it helps the publicity it gets killed by SOEs terrible name.
I'm guessing it was something like this, with a dash of "Make us the next WoW"/"Hell no" thrown in. Not sure how this will work out for Sigil in the long run, but I doubt SOE is going to want another game aimed at the noob mass market since they already have EQ2, so this would seem to bode well for Vanguard's uniqueness/niche focus, though probably not for its profitability.

That said, lots of the fanbois over on the Vanguard forums spend almost as much time slobbering over themselves with bilious hatred for SOE as they do hating WoW, so there'll probably be some serious changes in the community. But given how pathetic and arrogant a lot of posters on those boards have been, that's probably a good thing.

They will make sure our beta runs the way it needs to, that our game is widely marketed, and that our game is available all over, in all channels.
I thought beta was going fine?

I'm shocked. Simply shocked.

I came here to get away from Sony.

I played EQ. Sony screws it up.

I played SWG. Sony screws it up.

I attempt EQ2. Sony made such a bad game I don't even try.

I follow Vanguard for a year. Sony comes in! WTF.

I will never...ever...forgive Sony. Ever.
LOL ^^^ is from the Vanguard forums - Sony killed his dog irl.

"SONY MURDERED MY PARENTS I WILL NEVER FORGIVE THEM.

Oh wait, no, they just made some video games that nobody forced me to play, but I did anyways."

Oh my god that is exactly what I was going to say!

Now that licensing issues are out of the way, maybe they will can what they have and make the real sequel to EQ1 without that retarded broken world scheme that EQ2 had.

No shit. It's really funny when you think about it.

Also all these huge fanboys on VG forums are hysterical. There's nothing funnier than reading a post by some guy with a sig consisting of 20 lines of "I LOVE BRAD" making some mouth breathing post about "I AM DONE WITH THIS GAME"

Another Brad Post from that thread.

Well said:

Sigil retains their Vision on what Vanguard will be.
SOE is helping to distribute and market the title.

These are the key points:

1. We found an incredible opportunity: the opportunity to purchase the publishing rights from Microsoft and become our own publisher.

2. We now own both the IP (the intellectual property) of Vanguard and the publishing rights.

3. This gives us more control and autonomy than we have ever had before. We are no longer just a developer.

4. Microsoft was TOTALLY cool with this. They are still very happy about Vanguard and looking forward to it bolstering their Windows platform. Vanguard will be an XP game, but also a Vista game, offering both 32 bit and 64 bit clients. We will continue to work closely with them and with Vista's focus on entertainment/games/graphics, as well as online, Vanguard is key.

5. SOE was TOTALLY cool with this. They are excited to have the people who designed and worked on the original EQ and EQ expansions provide a game for them. They need a game like Vanguard next year -- it gives them a variety of games from which players can choose from, or players can just play Vanguard.

6. We continue to have total control over the game's design, how it is marketed, the community, customer service -- everything that is important to us and I think important to all of you.

7. Things like running game servers, getting ads (that we design and/or approve) into magazines, getting boxes into stores, etc., all of which SOE is great at doing, they can do while we focus on finishing up the game and on beta.

8. This also gives us more time to launch the game when it is truly ready.

9. edit: Also, Vanguard will *NOT* be part of SOE's 'buy and sell items for real world money'. Our hard line position against this for a game like Vanguard remains as strong as ever.

If there are any other concerns or questions about this -- that's what I'm here for. I know this is a big change and it takes a moment to wrap one's head around it, but bottom line is that it's the best thing for Vanguard, for Sigil, and for you, our future players.

Makes me wonder what MMO M$ is going to sink their money into. They've committed to getting a share of this 'emerging' market similar in scope to the impact WoW has created.

I'd say SOE puts the sugar in my coffee, but I like mine black. Either way, this made my day.

This can go either way, if SoE really doesn't have any control(which I doubt considering they are now funding and marketting)over the content, gameplay, etc. Then I think this might be a decent relationship o.O, but It can swing the other way just as hard.
