Surveys are a good thing of course. Global surveys that have a main purpose of determining why you hate the game are not a good sign.

Sending out a detailed survey to try and figure out why your game sucks is absolutely a good thing.

Having a game that requires such a survey however, is not.
What?

Money is like water. If a person is swimming in a pool and someone walks up and takes a piss in the water right beside them, can they really claim that they're only swimming in the pool water and not the piss? SOE might not have provided funding expressly for the publication rights buyback from MS, but by agreeing to meet certain other financial priorities Sigil was facing, they sure as hell facilitated the deal. Part of the Woody quote shows this:

Quote:
As it was related to me, SOE needed a title for next year, and with Sigil making the move from Microsoft Games, it was the perfect match. The monetary infusion from SOE also means that Sigil will have more development time to insure the quality of the game.

They were funding this project for what, four years? Which funding would include payroll (the biggest expense of most companies), equipment and office expenses. And in the interim WOW came out, blindsided the competition and increased the market tenfold.

Lately rumors hit websites (this one especially) how Beta was not going well for Vanguard, the game was not fun, few people even bothering to beta it, etc.. Brad, understandably, attempted damage control, but in the process made statements that I have to believe MS didn't like, namely that he was looking at "niche" numbers to qualify as success (100k a month subscriptions vs 5 million),and that he will continue to take his time developing the game to "his" vision with MS continuing to foot the bills.

Now MS has tons of money and they I am sure are not reluctant to expend funds in continual research and develpment. But sometimes certain projects just no longer seem worth pursuing and losses have to be cut.

It just seems so obvious that that is what has happened here. They are not thrilled with the project, it is not paning out to how it was originally sold to them, and they want to cut their losses as best they can.

Unless some serious changes are planned for VG, I am getting the feeling that it will wind up being nothing more than a niche game catering to a small market that just wants to play in a virtual world for the bulk of their free time.
I agree. Smed spinning on this thread more or less backs it up. SoE is excellent at selling shit like Vanguard to suckers.

You can spin it anyway you want I suppose, but I stand by AC1/AC2 completely destroying the "MS dropped it because it was a POS" argument.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but the vanboys at Silky Venom led by Oloh are still keeping the good fight:

"Before the people that post on FoH start rolling in and before the headless beast suffocates rational thought, I would like to be the first to congratulate Sigil Games Online on taking the next step to ensuring that Vanguard will be released on Sigil's terms, when it is ready.

SOE and Sigil to co-publish Vanguard.

Congratulations guys. " - Oloh

Oh please

7. Things like running game servers, ... which SOE is great at doing, they can do while we focus on finishing up the game and on beta.

EQ2 servers, from what I've heard, have been pretty damn stable. Why is this funny?

MS isnt a company that needs fast returns on their investment, especially if they were convinced that the extra time would have made VG an excellent product.

They were more likely concerned with the state of the game after 4 years of development and wanted to see some radical changes implemented.

Why else let a division of your biggest competitor in the gaming business acquire (this is what's going on folks) your flagship online gaming product? It's obvious that MS lost all faith in VG and did not simply push for an earlier release date.
